ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams will resume their respective seasons this week when the Midshipmen travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take part in the annual Nike Cup. Joining the Mids in the three-day event are North Carolina State, East Carolina, Old Dominion, Northeastern (women only), Drexel (diving only), James Madison (diving only) and the host Tar Heels of North Carolina.
The meet will use a format that mirrors a conference or NCAA Championship meet. Trial heats will begin daily at 10 a.m., with a nightly session of finals starting at 6 p.m.

"This has always been an important event on our schedule," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "The Nike Cup offers a championship-meet format against excellent competition. We are looking forward to racing and diving this week while trying to improve upon our performances thus far this season."
"The Nike Cup has always been a very competitive meet for our team," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison, who swam at and graduated from North Carolina. "The teams in this year's meet always swim fast, and we welcome the challenge of a quality field. There will be a ton of racing over the three days and many great opportunities for our team to compete. This meet will be a good indicator on how we need to approach the rest of the season from a training and competition standpoint."
Both Navy teams last took to the pool for a competition on Nov. 3 when each swept fellow Patriot League teams American and Bucknell. The results on the day improved the record on the year for the Navy women's team to 5-1, while the men's squad left Washington, D.C., with a 4-2 record for the season.
Last years Nike Cup saw the Navy men's team finish in second place and the women's team place fifth.
