ANNAPOLIS, Md.  - The Navy women's tennis team started the dual portion of its schedule off fast with a strong 7-0 victory over the visiting St. Francis University Red Flash at the Brigade Sports Complex on Saturday. Led by victories in both singles and doubles by Erin Snook (Sr., Tampa, Fla.), Mikaela Carlson (So., Carmel, Ind.) and Noelle Kaufmann (Jr., Westlake, Ohio), the Mids moved their all-time record against the Red Flash to 5-0.

"Today was a good way to start the season," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "Saint Francis has continued to improve and made us hit a lot of balls. With the new rules for match protocol from the ITA, it was a little bit of a learning process. We realized the importance of getting off to fast starts, especially in doubles where the set was played to six."

From the start, a game St. Francis squad challenged Navy as the doubles action saw the Mids earn the match point with a 2-1 performance. Navy's No. 3 doubles team of Snook and Summer Ralston (Fr., Roswell, Ga.) opened play with a 6-0 victory before the No. 1 team of Carlson and Kaufmann clinched the doubles point for the Mids with a 6-1 win.

In singles play, Navy flexed its muscle as it earned all six points and dropped just one set. Sam Droop (So, Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was the first Mid to clinch as she defeated SFU's Shivani Patel at the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-2. She was followed closely by Logan Antill (So., Butler, Pa.), who won at No. 4 by a score of 6-2, 6-2 and Snook at No. 1, who earned the team victory with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of SFU's Rafa Panizza.

With the overall match decided, Darien Sears (Sr., Silver Spring, Md.), Kaufmann and Carlson closed out the clean sweep for Navy. Sears took No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 outcome, while Kaufmann won at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-0. Carlson defeat SFU's Brittini Jentz in three sets as she pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 victory.

"We did a good job of maintaining the momentum from doubles to put together a very strong singles performance," said Puryear. "Tomorrow will be a tough test for us taking on a highly ranked regional team on the road."

The Mids will be back in action Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. matchup versus #49 Penn State in State College, Pa.
