ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team opened its 2013 dual-meet season with a thorough 7-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday morning at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
The Midshipmen won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, then won all six singles matches, five of the six victories coming in straight sets.
"We knew Saint Francis was improved, so we were prepared for a competitive match," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear, who won his 499th match as a collegiate head coach (men's and women's combined). "Even though we lost one of the doubles matches, I really like what we did today. We came out in doubles play and looked good and set the tone for the entire match. It was a really good start to the season."
Navy won doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take a 1-0 match lead. Noelle Kaufmann (So. / Westlake, Ohio) and Erin Snook (Jr. / Tampa, Fla.) opened the dual with an 8-3 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Antill won her 11th match of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles. Sears then clinched the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Snook won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2, to push the Navy lead to 5-0, while Emani Decquir (Sr. / Sacramento, Calif.) won her 55th career match with a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) win at No. 1 singles and Sam Droop (Fr. / Hilton Head Island, S.C.) closed out the sweep at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
"Overall, everybody looked solid, and we are pleased with the whole team's performance," said Puryear. "We have a tough match tomorrow at Virginia Tech and hopefully, we can keep improving and put our best foot forward."
