UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
The No. 49 Penn State women's tennis team (3-0) dealt visiting Navy (1-1) a 7-0 defeat at the Sarni Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. Penn State won the doubles point and swept the six singles matches.
"I thought across the board we did a pretty good job competing as a team," head coach Keith Puryear said. "Regardless of the scores, one of the things we did was fight like crazy and I think we gathered some respect from that. They did a better job executing than us and we need to do better on the big points. We have some things we can take away from this on the positive side but there are also some things we'll need to do better."
Penn State's Marie Bedard and Dasha Sapogova defeated Navy's Logan Antill and Katie Porter and No. 2 doubles, 6-0, and Katherine Whiteaway and Taylor Shukow clinched the doubles point by downing Erin Snook and Summer Ralston at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.
Penn State won all six singles matches but Navy senior Darien Sears fought hard at No. 2 singles against Carmen Sandor. Sandor won the first set, 6-3, before Sears came back to take the second, 6-0. However, Sandor earned a 10-6 win over Sears in the tiebreaker to win the match.
Carlson pushed Shukow at No. 6 singles before falling, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and Snook battled Chelsea Utting at No. 1 singles before falling, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Navy will host Saint Joseph's and Georgetown next weekend at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
"Both teams next weekend are worthy of regional rankings," said Puryear. "It well be two hard-fought matches."
