Women’s Tennis Posts Dual Wins Over St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis U
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s tennis team (2-1) won a pair of dual matches on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids defeated St. Bonaventure (1-1) in the morning, 6-1, before knocking off Saint Francis U (0-1), 7-0, in the afternoon. Navy picked up its first dual wins of the season after dropping a tight 4-3 decision to Big Ten-member Penn State in its season opener last weekend.
“It was good to get in the win column,” said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. “We were challenged by both teams. We persevered in some matches and were able to weather the storm. There were some good takeaways from both matches. I thought execution could be a little bit better at times, but we did a good job of making adjustments.”
Navy swept the doubles point against St. Bonaventure, winning at all three positions. Navy then won five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 team win.
Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Gabriella Bowe and Kahlei Reisinger. Keller also defeated Bowe at the No. 1 singles position, 6-1, 6-0, while Hodge defeated Dominique Mortier at the No. 3 singles position, 6-1, 6-2.
Keller’s singles win moved her into a tie for second place at Navy with Darien Sears ’14 for most career singles wins with 78.
Keller and Hodge improved to a team-best 10-3 in doubles play this season.
Conway improved to 10-3 in singles matches this season. She is tied with Keller (10-6) for the team lead in singles wins.
Sophomore Aimee Dervishian (No.4) and freshman Miranda Deng (No. 6) also won singles matches against St. Bonaventure, while senior Isabel Balsavage and freshman Tina Li were victorious at the No. 3 doubles position.
Navy improved to 6-1 all-time against St. Bonaventure.
Navy split the top two doubles matches against Saint Francis U, but a default win at the No. 3 position swung the doubles point to Navy’s favor. Deng partnered with junior Catalina Rico for a 7-6 (7-3) win over Lucia Seigford and Raksha Bode at the No. 2 doubles position.
Navy won all five singles matches that were contested, and also picked up a default win at the No. 6 slot.
Sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors bested Laura Gutierrez at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0, and junior Josie Rogers beat Seigford at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Brooke Bogdanovich won in straight sets at No. 3 singles over Bode, 6-4, 6-0.
Cyr (No. 4) and Rico (No. 5) also won singles matches against the Red Flash.
Navy improved to 9-0 all-time against Saint Francis U. This is the ninth straight year that the two teams have met for a dual match.
“One of the hallmarks of our program is that we always go out and fight,” said Puryear. “We did a good job of fighting today. I always think we can continue to do better, but I do like the direction that we are heading right now.”
Navy will next play at Old Dominion on Saturday, January 27 at 1:00 PM.
