Women's Tennis Downs Saint Joseph's, 4-3
Jan. 25, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (2-1) lost the doubles point but rallied for a 4-3 win over visiting Saint Joseph's (0-1) on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy trailed, 1-0, but won four of six singles matches to win its 17th straight home match.
"We had a couple hard-fought matches against a very well-coached Saint Joseph's team," head coach Keith Puryear said. "We came out a bit too slowly in doubles with the new shortened format, but I was pleased with how we responded in singles. We showed a lot of fight to come back and win the match. I was pretty pleased with our performance, but we will certainly have to come out stronger in doubles going forward."
Saint Joseph's won the doubles point by picking up wins at No. 1 (6-3) and No. 2 doubles (6-4). Navy and Saint Joseph's were even at No. 3 doubles, 3-3, when the doubles point was clinched.
Navy then came out strong to start singles play, winning the first set in five of six matches.
A pair of Navy freshmen earned hard-fought wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles to clinch the win for Navy. Audrey Channell won at No. 3 singles over Devi Jadeja, 6-3, 6-7 (7-2), 1-0 (10-8) and Summer Ralston won at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) over Alex Zachem.
Navy showed its depth by using its reserve singles lineup against Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
Navy will return to action on Sunday morning against visiting Georgetown at the Tose Family Tennis Center at 11:00 AM.
