Eight Players Record Victories In Navy's 5-2 Win Over Villanova
Feb. 2, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team kicked off its 13-match homestand in impressive fashion, breezing past Big East member Villanova, 5-2, on Saturday morning in Annapolis.
The win evens Navy's record to 3-3 overall, while Villanova was competing in its season opener.
"It was a total team effort today. We tried to give everyone a chance to compete and it was a challenge, because Villanova is a formidable opponent," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We showed off our depth a little bit today. I thought the plebes did a great job as well as the upperclassmen. Like always, there are things we could have done better, but I am pleased with the result."
Puryear got a balanced effort up-and-down the lineup, clinching the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The Mids won the first completed doubles match at No. 3 doubles when Mikaela Carlson (Fr. / Carmel, Ind.) and Tracy Thorsell (Fr. / Martinsville, Ind.) cruised to an 8-0 victory. After dropping the match at No. 1 doubles, Logan Antill (Fr. / Butler, Pa.) and Darien Sears (Jr. / Silver Spring, Md.) clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
"The win at No. 2 doubles was a big win. Villanova fought back in that match, but we kept our resolve and secured the doubles point," said Puryear. "It came down to the last point at 7-6. We lose that point and then we possibly lose the match and doubles point. The win gave us good momentum into singles play."
Navy clinched the match with the first three completed matches in singles play, coming at Nos. 5, 6 and 4, respectively. Freshman Vivian Chau (Rowland Heights, Calif.) gave Navy a 2-0 match lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Cassandra Fisbeck (Fr. / Granada Hills, Calif.) pushed the lead to 3-0 at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph and Katie Porter (Fr. / Matthews, N.C.) clinched the Navy team victory at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
For good measure, sophomore Noelle Kaufmann (Westlake, Ohio) was victorious at No. 5 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4).
Of Navy's eight combined wins, freshmen had a hand in six of them.
Navy returns to the court Sunday when it hosts George Mason at 10:30 AM and Morgan State at 3:00 PM at the Brigade Sports Complex.
