Conway Clinches 4-3 Win Over George Washington in Women’s Tennis
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Carlee Conway’s win at No. 4 singles clinched a 4-3 win for the Navy women’s tennis team (3-2) over George Washington (2-1) on Friday at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (STLC). Navy defeated George Washington for just the second time in seven all-time meetings between the two schools. Navy’s last win in the series came in 2014.
“I’m really happy for our ladies,” said head coach Keith Puryear. “It was a very tough match. GW came in with a lot of confidence, having beat Harvard earlier this year, which was a big win for their program.
“Across the board it was a great team win for us. I thought the determination that we showed was a testament to the hard work that we have been putting in and a belief in one another. It was a good win for our team.”
Navy opened the day with a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Senior Claudia Mackenzie and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors bested Marie-Louise Decamps and Victoria Kogan at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, and senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Maria Siopacha and Melis Bayraktaroglu at No. 1 doubles. Junior Catalina Rico and freshman Miranda Deng also knocked off Kamilla Beisenova and Diana Kussainova at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (9-7).
With her doubles win on Friday, Keller moved into a tie for second place at Navy in career combined wins (136) with 2014 graduate Darien Sears. Keller and Sears are also tied for second place all-time at Navy in career singles wins (78) and tied for third in career doubles wins (58).
George Washington took a 2-1 lead in the match after picking up singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots, before Louie-Meadors defeated Melis Bayraktaroglu at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Mackenzie then put Navy ahead 3-2 with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Beisenova at No. 6 singles.
The Colonials evened the match at 3-3 with a three-set tiebreaker win at No. 5 singles, but Conway then edged Sara Grubac at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 to clinch the team win for the Mids.
Conway improved to a team-best 11-4 in singles play this season with her match-clinching victory.
Navy will play two more dual matches this weekend. The Mids will first host Mount St. Mary’s (0-2) on Saturday at 10 AM at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy will then open Patriot League play at Boston University (1-3) on Sunday at 9 AM at the Winchester Tennis Center in Winchester, Mass.
