ANNAPOLIS, Md.  - The Navy women's tennis team went 1-1 on Saturday in a pair of non-conference matches at the Brigade Sports Complex. In the first match of the day, Navy defeated Longwood, 5-2 before falling in the afternoon to James Madison, 4-3. In an all-around team effort, six different Mids earned singles wins over the two matches.

Navy (8-2) began competition on Saturday against Longwood (0-2) and earned a hard-fought doubles point versus a short-handed Lancers squad. With the Mids earning a defaulted win at No. 3 doubles, they had a battle on their hands at the first and second positions as both matches went into extra action. The No. 1 team of Katie Porter (So., Matthews, N.C.) and Gabby Winter (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) would earn the team point with a 7-5 win over Longwood's team of Malin Allgurin and Sarah Moomau. Logan Antill (So., Butler, Pa.) and Summer Ralston (Fr., Roswell, Ga.) closed out the doubles sweep with a 7-6 win over Paloma Alatorre and Anna Pelak.

The Lancers once again challenged the Mids in singles action as the visitors took wins at the first and second positions. Rozel Hernandez (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) got Navy on the board first with a straight set win at No. 5 singles over Mason Thomas, 6-4, 6-1. Cassandra Fisbeck (So., Granada Hills, Calif.) earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 3 before Vivian Chau (So., Rowland Heights, Calif.) closed out the win with a three-set victory at the No. 4 position. Chau battled Pelak to a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 result.

In their second match of the day, Navy fell behind early 1-0 as James Madison (1-1) earned the doubles point with a 2-1 outcome. The No. 3 team of Sam Droop (So., Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Darien Sears (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) was the lone victorious pairing as they defeated JMU's team of Jackie Palmucci and Ruxandra Andriescu, 6-3.

Finding themselves in a deficit, the Mids put up a strong effort in the singles portion of the match with three wins and a fourth match going into a tie-breaking third set. Erin Snook (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) was the first Navy player to capture a win, as she ousted Taylor Pinchoff by a 6-0, 6-4 score at No. 1 singles. Soon after Snook's victory, Droop followed up her teammate with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Alex Huie. Antill gave Navy its third team point as she came back from a first set loss to JMU's Emily Bradshaw to win at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

With the match even at 3-3, the win came down to the action in No. 5 singles between Navy's Gabby Winter and JMU's Andriescu. The combatants split the first two sets with Andriescu taking the opener 6-3 before Winter responded with a 6-3 win of her own. In the tie-breaking third set, Andriescu earned the individual match and overall team win with a 10-6 score.

"I thought we did a good job overall today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We competed throughout even when we found ourselves in a deficit versus JMU in the second match. Against JMU we lost the doubles point and could've rolled over, but we constantly fought back and made them work the whole time. Versus Longwood, I was really pleased with individuals stepping up in new situations and finding success. Even with the split, we took steps towards improving and that's always a goal of ours."

The Mids will be back in action next Sunday, Feb. 16 with a home match versus Radford at 3 p.m.
