ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (6-4) defeated Villanova (1-2), 5-2, and Towson (1-2), 7-0, on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy won four of six doubles matches and 10 of 12 singles matches on the day.

"We had a healthy amount of respect for both teams coming in today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "Villanova just lost a tough match to Lehigh, and Towson played Penn State and lost 4-3, just as we did. We knew both teams would present challenges for us."

Navy opened the day with a 5-2 win over Villanova. The Mids improved to 7-0 all-time against the Wildcats.

Junior Catalina Rico and freshman Amanda Cyr bested Lindsey Evans and Victoria Martinez at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, while sophomore Aimee Dervishian and sophomore Danika Kahatapitiya beat Lexi DeNucci and Kaylan Rotman at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, to allow Navy to claim the doubles point.

Cyr was the first player to finish in singles, scoring a 6-2, 6-0 win over Evans at the No. 2 position. After a Villanova win at No. 6 singles, sophomore Kaylah Hodge defeated DeNucci at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Villanova won another singles match at the No. 3 position, but Navy closed with two singles wins at No. 4 and No. 5 for the 5-2 win. Dervishian knocked off Alexandra Krogus at No. 4 (6-3, 7-6 (8-6)), while freshman Miranda Deng defeated Martinez at No. 5 (6-1, 4-6, 6-1).

In their second match of the day the Mids blanked Towson 7-0 to improve to 8-0 in the all-time series against the Tigers.

Senior captain Amanda Keller and Hodge blanked Renate van Oorschodt and A.J. Gomer at No. 1 doubles, 6-0. Senior Claudia Mackenzie and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Nicole Shakhnazarova and Barbora Vasilkova.

Navy won all six singles matches against Towson.

Keller bested Shakhnazarova at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Louie-Meadors defeated Lucy Williams at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-3.

Sophomore Ansofi Wreder defeated Gomer at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2, while senior Carlee Conway knocked off Vasilkova at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 7-5.

Junior Josie Rogers defeated van Oorschodt at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and Mackenzie defeated Lucy Gloninger on the No. 6 court, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).

"These were two great team wins," said Puryear. "Over the course of the two matches everyone on our team had a chance to compete. I was pleased with how we came out against doubles in both matches. We came out strong in singles as well and against Towson we won the first set on every court, which I believe is the first time we had done that this season."

With her win with Hodge at the No. 1 position against Towson, Keller won her 61st career doubles match and is now tied for first place in school history with 2014 graduate Erin Snook for career doubles victories. Keller is 61-29 all-time in doubles matches.

"I was really pleased with our performance today," said Puryear. "As always there are still things we need to continue to work on, but I was really pleased with how we competed today."

Navy will next host Johns Hopkins on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 11 AM.
