Navy Women's Tennis Downs Radford and Richmond
Feb. 16, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (10-2) swept a pair of matches on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex. The Mids defeated Radford (1-3), 5-2, in the morning and Richmond (2-2), 4-3, in the afternoon.
"Across the board it was two team wins and it was an impressive weekend for us," head coach Keith Puryear said.
Navy opened the day by taking the doubles point against Radford. Freshmen Audrey Channell and Rozel Hernandez defeated Taylor Fay and Gisela Garcia, 8-4 at No. 3 doubles and then Katie Porter and Gabby Winter sealed it at No. 1 doubles with a 9-7 win over Grace Sarver and Meg Napolitano.
Freshman Summer Ralston defeated Sara Andrade at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 7-5 and Hernandez defeated Sarver at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-5), 1-0 (11-9).
"I thought that everybody stepped up to secure the doubles point against Radford to start us off," said Puryear. "Then Katie Porter, Cassandra Fisbeck, Rozel Hernandez and Summer Ralston came through with their singles wins. I thought Audrey Channell lost a really tough one at No. 2."
Navy rallied in the second match of the day to defeat Richmond, 4-3, after losing the doubles point. The Mids won four of the six singles matches to pull off the victory. Senior Darien Sears won at No. 2 singles over Melissa Kandinata, 6-4, 6-2 and Winter earned the win at No. 5 singles over Brittany Boys, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Snook's win, which clinched the match, was the 80th singles win of her career. Snook's is Navy's all-time leader in singles wins.
"It was a war against Richmond," said Puryear. "It was disappointing to lose the doubles point to go down 1-0 to start the match off. But Darien Sears, Erin Snook and Sam Droop all did a good job gaining hold of their matches right away in the first set. Sam lost the second but she systematically kept working her way back to win the match. And even in defeat Logan Antill showed a lot of resolve to be able to fight back to make her match a battle."
Navy will host Seton Hall next Friday and No. 53 DePaul on Saturday.
