Feb. 21, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (11-2) earned a 5-2 win over Seton Hall (3-2) on Friday evening at the Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex.

Navy lost the doubles points but rallied to win five of the six singles matches to secure the 5-2 victory. Navy now leads the all-time series against Seton Hall, 4-1.

"Seton Hall came out with a lot of energy in the doubles and they were the more aggressive team early on," said head coach Keith Puryear. "We had the opportunities in doubles play but we played too defensively and Seton Hall got the upper hand. But in singles play we really stepped up when we had to and the bottom of our lineup really set the tone for us and that was the difference in the match."

Senior Darien Sears and sophomore Sam Droop teamed in doubles action and were victorious at No. 3 over Julia Keenan and Alex Landert, 8-3, but Navy lost at No. 1 and No. 2 to drop the doubles point.

Navy responded by winning the first two singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6. Junior Gabby Winter defeated Madison Shoemaker at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and junior Noelle Kaufmann defeated Julie Martiny at No. 6, 6-3, 6-0.

After Seton Hall won at No. 1 singles to pull the match even at 2-2, sophomore Logan Antill won at No. 4 singles over Keenan, 6-2, 7-5 and then Droop clinched the team win at No. 3 singles in a second set tiebreak over Rocio Portela, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

Droop won her sixth straight singles match and improved to 7-1 in dual play this spring with the win.

For good measure, Sears rallied to defeat Hannah Liljekvist at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 after the match was already in hand.

Navy will next host No. 45 DePaul (10-1) on Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Tose Family Tennis Center. DePaul will face Seton Hall at 9:00 AM at the Tose Family Tennis Center before meeting the Mids.
