ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team won the crucial doubles point, then won four of six singles matches to defeat Howard on Saturday afternoon at the Brigade Sports Complex, 5-2.

The win was Navy's 11th in a row, tying a school record set last year when the Midshipmen started the season 11-0. Navy is now 13-3 overall entering a midweek match against Delaware on Wednesday.

Navy was playing without its normal Nos. 1 and 2 players in Emani Decquir (Sr. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Erin Snook (Jr. / Tampa, Fla.), but head coach Keith Puryear got solid performances up-and-down the lineup for the team victory.

"This was a really a great team win, and to do so without Emani and Erin says a lot about our team. Everyone really stepped up," said Puryear. "I like the way responded to the challenge. We had to be on our feet and we did a good job overall."

Navy won the critical doubles point in impressive fashion, when Mikaela Carlson (Fr. / Carmel, Ind.) and Tracy Thorsell (Fr. / Martinsville, Ind.) won at No. 2 doubles by a 9-7 tally and Logan Antill (Fr. / Butler, Pa.) and Darien Sears (Jr. / Silver Spring, Md.) won at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-7 (4).

"We had a couple opportunities in both doubles matches, but I liked the way we continued to fight and forge ahead and get a big point," said Puryear.

No. 3 doubles was not contested as Navy won by default.

After Howard defaulted at No. 6 singles to give Navy a 2-0 lead, Sam Droop (Fr. / Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Katie Porter (Fr. / Matthews, N.C.) clinched the victory at Nos. 5 and 4 singles by impressive straight-set sweeps.

Navy's last win came at No. 1 singles when Sears defeated Katelyn Stokes by a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (23-21) tally. Stokes entered the match ranked No. 17 in the region and had defeated Sears every time the two had played, dating way back to juniors.

"Katie and Sam got us off to a great start and really kept control of match and set the tone for singles play," said Puryear. "Darien had a real wild match that went back and forth. Both of them had match points in the third set and each other hit winners a couple of times. It was a hotly-contested match with a high level of play."

Navy will face Delaware on Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the Brigade Sports Complex.
