Women's Tennis Sweeps Northern Iowa and Swarthmore

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Navy women's tennis team (14-5, 0-1 PL) opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep of Northern Iowa (4-4) and Swarthmore (0-3) on Monday. Navy first defeated Northern Iowa, 7-0, and then bested Swarthmore by the same 7-0 score.

Navy won all 12 of its singles matches and all six of its doubles matches on Monday.

The Navy-Northern Iowa match started at 10:45 AM with the Mids sweeping the doubles point, but rain came into the area and the teams did not resume the contest with singles play until 4:00 PM. The match was played at the IMG Academy in Bradenton.

Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge defeated Northern Iowa's Gisela Kemper and Reghan Lynch at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, while senior Claudia Mackenzie and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors bested Harri Proudfoot and Valentina Caro at No. 2 doubles, 6-0.

Senior Carlee Conway and freshman Amanda Cyr also knocked off Claudia Toledo and Savanna Hunt at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.

In singles play against Northern Iowa, Keller posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Kemper and Mackenzie defeated Proudfoot at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Ansofi Wreder defeated Lynch at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-0) and junior Josie Rogers knocked off Toledo at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Sophomore Aimee Dervishian bested Caro at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-4, and sophomore Danika Kahatapitiya defeated Hunt at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Navy improved to 2-0 all-time against Northern Iowa. The Mids posted a 5-2 win over the Panthers on last year's spring break trip to Florida.

In the second match of the day against Swarthmore, the Mids once again won every match. The Navy-Swarthmore match was played at the Beerman Tennis Center in Lakeland.

Junior Catalina Rico and Cyr posted a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Swarthmore's Anna Scheibmeir and Maria Cuervo, and senior Isabel Balsavage and freshman Tina Li defeated Julia Gokhberg and Shirline Wee at No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Sophomore Meghan O'Malley and freshman Brooke Bogdanovich also defeated Arya Jemal and Rachel Bronkema at No. 3 doubles, 6-0.

Louie-Meadors posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Wee and Conway defeated Gokhberg at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Hodge knocked off Jemal at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Bogdanovich defeated Scheibmeir at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Miranda Deng defeated Cuervo at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and O'Malley earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Audrey Haring at No. 6 singles.

This is the second time Navy and Swarthmore have played on a Florida spring break trip, and the Mids have won both matches.

The Mids have now won 10 of their last 11 matches.

Navy will continue its spring break schedule with two more matches on Tuesday. Navy will face Quinnipiac at the IMG Academy in Bradenton at 10:45 AM and Fairleigh Dickinson at the Star Island Resort in Orlando at 4:00 PM.
