Women’s Tennis Defeats Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Navy women’s tennis team (16-5, 0-1 PL) earned a pair of wins over Quinnipiac (5-5) and Fairleigh Dickinson (0-7) on Tuesday on its spring break trip in Florida. Navy defeated Quinnipiac, 6-1, at the IMG Academy in Bradenton in the morning and then bested Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, at the Star Island Resort in Orlando in the afternoon.
“Today we beat a very talented, but shorthanded, FDU team, and Quinnipiac normally wins their conference,” said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. “We really used our depth today. No player played more than one singles match.”
Navy has gone 4-0 on its spring break trip, as the Mids bested Northern Iowa, 6-1, and Swarthmore, 6-1, on Monday.
“It’s been good to get down here and play some matches outdoors,” said Puryear. “We had challenging conditions yesterday and the wind was really whipping around. But I thought we showed really good mental toughness. We were really resilient in yesterday’s matches and beat two good teams.”
In the opening match against Quinnipiac on Tuesday, Navy won all three doubles matches.
Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge defeated Quinnipiac’s Jennifer Lu and Layla Rodriguez at the No. 1 doubles position, 6-2, and senior Claudia Mackenzie and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors knocked off Payton Bradley and Stephanie Yanosov at No. 2 doubles, 6-1.
Keller and Hodge improved to 18-6 in doubles this year, while Mackenzie and Louie-Meadors improved to 17-4.
Mackenzie is now tied for second place on Navy’s career doubles wins list with Erin Snook with 61. Keller is Navy’s all-time doubles wins leader with 65.
Navy won five of the six singles matches against the Bobcats.
Keller blanked Lu at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Rogers won a three-set match against Bradley at the No. 3 slot, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Wreder posted a 6-1, 6-3, win over Rodriguez at No. 4 singles and Hodge defeated Nash at No. 6 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Senior Carlee Conway earned a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over Lohaphaisan.
With her singles victory, Conway moved into a tie for 10th place on Navy’s career singles wins list with Gabby Winter with 49 wins.
In the second match of the day, the Mids took down Fairleigh Dickinson, who had just four players available.
Sophomores Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya posted a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Tatiana Eftenoiu and Anamaria Vladescu. That win and Navy’s win at No. 3 doubles by default gave the Mids the doubles point.
Navy earned two more default wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, while also winning three of the four contested singles matches.
Freshman Amanda Cyr defeated Patricia Eftenoiu at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, freshman Miranda Deng bested Marta Ruszczynska at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-5, and junior Catalina Rico took down Vladescu at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Navy will play its fifth and final match of its spring break trip against Bryant on Wednesday at 10:45 AM at the IMG Academy in Bradenton.
“I feel pretty good about where we are and the progress that are we making,” said Puryear. “But we always have to keep pushing to continue to get better down the road.”
