ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy women's tennis team (14-6) dropped a pair of matches on Saturday at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy fell to Howard (4-3), 5-2, before dropping a 4-3 match to St. Bonaventure (5-8) in the nightcap. The Mids will next host Providence on Sunday at 9:00 AM.
"In a nutshell, we didn't get the job done," head coach Keith Puryear said. "We fought, like we always do on a consistent basis, but we didn't execute and we had too many unforced errors in inopportune times.
"We just still have some things we need to address and do better," said Puryear. "Both of our opponents were a little tougher than we were today across the board. Howard and St. Bonaventure are good programs and they are better than their records show and they proved that today. We need to do better on things on our end and we will try to right the ship tomorrow against Providence."
Howard went 2-1 in doubles play to take the point in the opener and then won four of six singles matches for the 5-2 decision. Navy's lone doubles win was at No. 3 where Mikaela Carlson and Gabby Winter defeated Umarah Mughnee and Audra Bell, 8-7 (7-4).
Navy's Sam Droop defeated Maame Osei at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and freshman Audrey Channell defeated Audra Bell at No. 6 singles in a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-8) thriller, but the Mids fell in the other four singles matches.
Navy then dropped its second match of the day to St. Bonaventure, 4-3.
The Mids had a strong start to the match by sweeping the doubles point, 3-0. Cassandra Fisbeck and Rozel Hernandez defeated Maria Brossard and Mara Martinez-Santori at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Vivian Chau and Summer Ralston downed Fatya Amiri and Mariam Skhirtladze at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, and Allie Pavlansky and Maggie McLaughlin blanked Emily Rosman and Taylor Cole at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
St. Bonaventure then rebounded to win four of the six singles matches to earn the team victory.
Navy's lone singles wins against St. Bonaventure came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Ralston defeated Cole at No. 5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and Pavlansky earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rosman at No. 6 singles.
Due to injuries or illness, Navy did not use regular contributors Logan Antill, Noelle Kaufmann or Katie Porter in singles action.
Navy will look to return to its winning ways against Providence on Sunday at 9:00 AM.
