HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Navy women's tennis team won its fifth match in a row on Sunday afternoon, defeating Colgate, 7-0, at the Eastside Racket Club. The Midshipmen improved to 16-1 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League. Colgate fell to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in the league standings.
Navy won the doubles point for the first time in seven matches dating back to Feb. 26 against Loyola after winning Nos. 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 match lead.
Navy's No. 3 doubles tandem of Dye Das (Jr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) won the first completed doubles match by an 8-0 score. After Colgate won at No. 1 doubles, Noelle Kaufmann (Fr. / Westlake, Ohio) and Erin Snook (So. / Tampa, Fla.) clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 decision.
"After securing the doubles point we did a really good job of maintaining momentum going into the singles matches," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear.
The Midshipmen then dominated in singles play for their 16th victory of the season. Snook, Gabby Winter (Fr. / Orlando, Fla.) and Kaufmann all won matches at Nos. 4, 5 and 6, respectively, by allowing their opponents to win a combined two games. Snook was a 6-0, 6-0 victor at No. 4 singles over Merideth Rock, Winter won her 20th match of the season at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Jackie Finn and Kaufmann breezed at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia Rauh.
Navy completed the sweep with victories at the top three singles positions. Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) was a straight-set victor at No. 2 singles by a 6-0, 7-5 tally over Kelsey Shea. Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) topped Stephanie Brown by a 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 2 singles. Darien Sears closed out the sweep at No. 1 singles with a thrilling 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Petrini.
"I was really impressed with all the ladies, but Darien had the match of the day," added Puryear. "She and her opponent played a high-quality match from start to finish. It was great to see her come back with a strong match after losing a close one yesterday. We can now look to prepare for our matches next weekend at home against Lehigh and Lafayette."
Navy will host Lafayette on Saturday at 2:30 PM and Lehigh on Sunday at 10:00 AM.
