Navy Completes Weekend Sweep With 6-1 Win Over Lehigh
April 1, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team continued its red-hot play on Sunday afternoon at the Naval Academy with a 6-1 victory over Lehigh. The Mids won their seventh match in a row and moved to 18-1 overall, 4-0 in the Patriot League.
Lehigh fell to 3-11 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Navy closes out the Patriot League regular season with an unbeaten 4-0 record and have won nine straight regular-season matches against Patriot League foes, spanning three seasons. Navy is 9-1 all-time in the regular season against Patriot League opponents.
Navy won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 match lead. The Midshipmen grinded out wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to grab the early advantage. Dye Das (Jr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) earned Navy's first doubles win with an 8-4 decision at No. 3. Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) combined for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles to wrap up the doubles point for the Midshipmen.
"Lehigh played very well and pushed us hard in doubles action. Our execution in doubles was patchy at times, but I liked the way we were able to step up in the crunch, particularly at the No. 1 position, to get the doubles point," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear.
Navy then cruised in singles play, winning five of the six contested matches, four of them coming in straight sets.
Emani Decquir may have had the best performance, coming in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Abby Farrell at No. 2 singles. Snook ran her winning streak to seven matches and won her 20th match of the season in a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Gabby Drucker at No. 4 singles.
Gabby Winter (Fr. / Orlando, Fla.) won her seventh match in a row and picked up her team-leading 22nd victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles over Jill Sloand.
Sears picked up her second win of the weekend and 15th of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Jenai Bilimoria.
Navy's last win came at No. 6 singles when freshman Noelle Kaufmann (Westlake, Ohio) pushed her school-record winning streak to 12 matches in a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) three-set thriller over Emily Brunch. Kaufmann remained undefeated in dual-meet action, now with a 12-0 dual-meet record and a 17-5 overall mark.
"Emani (Decquir) played very well today. She was very focused and played thoughtfully all weekend in singles and doubles," said Puryear. "Erin (Snook), Gabby (Winter) and Darien (Sears) played very solid matches today as well."
Navy remains home by hosting Howard on Thursday at 3:00 pm in Annapolis.
"Howard is a talented and athletic team that is expected to challenge for the MEAC Championship," added Puryear.
