Women’s Tennis Defeats Bucknell and Colgate on Sunday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s tennis team (23-5, 4-1 PL) won two Patriot League matches on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy defeated Bucknell (12-6, 2-1 PL), 6-1, in the morning, and then defeated Colgate (6-12, 1-4 PL), 7-0, in the afternoon.
Navy extended its winning streak to 11 matches, which is tied for the third-longest winning streak in program history. Navy is 19-1 in its last 20 matches.
“It was a very good weekend across the board,” said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. “This week was a pretty tough week with 12-week exams and coming off a pretty emotional win over Army last Saturday. One of the tenants of a good team is how you recover after a tough loss, but also how you handle things after a big win. So to have three conference matches this weekend and to handle all of that with aplomb was great to see. The wins were great, but it was also how we handled everything in each match. Everybody made a contribution this weekend.”
In the opening match against Bucknell, Navy swept the doubles matches, 3-0.
Freshman Amanda Cyr and junior Catalina Rico defeated Mishi Papich and Sofia Ayuso at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, and senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Lisa Jouravleva and Paige Leavy at No. 1 doubles.
Hodge and Keller improved to a team-best 22-6 in doubles matches this season.
Navy then won five of the six singles matches against the Bison.
Bucknell posted a win at No. 6 singles, but Cyr then clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Papich at No. 3 singles.
Cyr improved to 18-3 in singles matches this season.
Keller closed out a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Jouravleva and freshman Brooke Bogdanovich defeated Koch, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Navy has won 12-straight matches in the series against Bucknell and the Mids lead the all-time series against the Bison, 12-2.
In the second match of the day against Colgate, Navy again swept the doubles matches and then won all six singles matches in straight sets.
Sophomore Aimee Dervishian and Kahatapitiya posted a 6-1 win over MacKenzie Deeter and Jordan Williams at No. 1 doubles, freshman Miranda Deng and Mackenzie defeated Kelly Klein and Cheyenne Brown at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, and senior Isabel Balsavage and freshman Tina Li bested Lauren O’Brien and Stephanie Fuentes at No. 3 doubles, 6-2.
Keller posted her second win of the day at No. 1 singles with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Colgate’s Deeter.
Keller is now 20-14 in singles matches this season and 88-57 in her career. Keller is two wins shy of tying 2014 graduate Erin Snook for first place on Navy’s all-time singles wins list with 90.
Louie-Meadors downed Colgate’s O’Brien at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Hodge defeated Williams at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Louie-Meadors improved to a team-best 21-8 in singles matches this season.
