Mids Power Past Lehigh, 6-1, in Women's Tennis
April 10, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (19-7, 4-1 PL) earned a 6-1 Patriot League win over visiting Lehigh (6-9, 1-2 PL) on Thursday afternoon at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy is now just one win shy of reaching the 20-win plateau for the fourth straight season.
"Lehigh is a much improved team and it seems like everyone in the conference has stepped up their level," said head coach Keith Puryear. "They have some good freshmen and even though they had to play without their No. 1 player, they still came after us and made us play. It was a good match for us and now we will look forward to Loyola on Sunday."
Navy won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point against the Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Mikaela Carlson and sophomore Cassandra Fisbeck defeated Ali Kaminetsky and Abby Farrell at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, and senior Erin Snook and sophomore Katie Porter bested Taylor Hampshire and Cassidy Cruz at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
Carlson was the first to close out her singles match as she blanked Kaminetsky at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and Porter also cruised past Marian Prim at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Carlson and Porter were both moved into the singles lineup to fill in for injured starters Noelle Kaufmann and Logan Antill.
"We had two out with injuries today and Mikaela and Katie stepped in and did a great job," said Puryear. "Throughout the year we give everyone an opportunity to play and that's one of the reasons we play so many matches. If we have somebody get hurt, people are ready to step right in."
Snook picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Farrell at No. 1 singles and that victory put Navy ahead 4-0 and clinched the team win. Snook tied a pair of program records on Thursday as she matched the school's career doubles win record of 59 and tied the record for most wins in a season at No. 1 singles with 14. Snook is now tied for both records with 2013 graduate Emani Decquir.
Snook is already the Navy record holder in career singles wins (89) and career combined singles and doubles wins (148).
Sophomore Sam Droop won her seventh straight singles match by defeating Jessica Graham at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-3. Droop became the first Mid to reach 20 singles wins this season as she moved her overall record to 20-10. She is also an impressive 16-3 in dual matches.
Senior Darien Sears was the final Midshipmen to pick up a singles win as she knocked off Cruz at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Navy is now 5-0 all-time against Lehigh.
Navy improved its all-time record to 99-29 and the Mids could earn their 100th program win on Senior Day against Loyola on Sunday at 11:00 AM at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy will recognize the two members of its senior class, Snook and Sears, at Sunday's match.
