Women’s Tennis Defeats Saint Joseph’s to Earn 12th-Straight Victory
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Navy women’s tennis team (24-5, 4-1 PL) defeated Saint Joseph’s (3-12), 6-1, on Tuesday at the outdoor SJU Tennis Complex to extend its winning streak to 12 matches. Navy swept the doubles point and won five of six singles matches.
Navy’s 12-match winning streak is tied for the second-longest in program history. The team is 20-1 in its last 21 matches and Navy’s 24 wins are one shy of the school record of 25.
“It took a little bit of adjusting to the weather conditions,” said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. “It was our first outdoor match of the spring in the north and it was cold and windy. St. Joe’s did a good job of fighting and making us earn our points on most of the courts. We did a good job of sticking around and establishing the things we needed to do to be successful. We just stayed with it throughout the match. I liked our play.”
Sophomores Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position over Amanda Nava and Isis Gill-Reid. Dervishian and Kahatapitiya have won 11-straight doubles matches together and are 17-4 on the season.
Deng was the first player to win a singles match with her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sprinckmoller at the No. 5 court.
Deng won her ninth-straight singles match, which is tied for the eighth-longest streak in program history. Deng is 9-0 in dual matches this season.
Saint Joseph’s won at No. 3 singles, but Navy freshman Brooke Bogdanovich bested Katherine Devlin at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-0, to put Navy ahead at 3-1. Bogdanovich won her seventh-straight singles match to improve to 13-3 on the season.
Cyr then clinched the Navy team win with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Gill-Reid at No. 4 singles. Cyr improved to 19-3 in singles matches this season.
Senior captain Amanda Keller defeated Nava at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5. Keller, who was named the Patriot League Women’s Tennis Player of the Week earlier on Tuesday, won her 89th career singles match, which is just one shy of tying Navy’s program record. Keller is already Navy's career leader in all-time doubles wins (69) and combined singles and doubles wins (158).
Junior Josie Rogers won a three-set match over Maureen Devlin at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Rogers won her 12th-straight singles match, which is tied for the third-longest winning streak in program history.
Navy is now 6-1 all-time against Saint Joseph’s.
“It was a good match for us and it was good prep for tomorrow’s match at home against Loyola, where we will face similar weather conditions,” Puryear said.
Navy will host Loyola (12-2, 2-2 PL) tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3:00 PM on Senior Day. The Navy-Loyola match is scheduled to be played at the USNA Varsity Tennis Courts near Gate One of the Naval Academy.
