ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team capped off a sensational home season on Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 6-1 victory over Towson at the Brigade Sports Complex. The win was Navy's eighth in a row and pushes Navy's record to a spectacular 19-1 overall. Towson fell to 11-10 with the loss.
Navy improved to 15-1 during the 2012 season at home and are now a sparkling 43-9 (.827) in its three-year Division I history on the courts in Annapolis.
"At this stage of the season, we know that we are not going to sneak up on anyone and Towson came prepared to play today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear, who won his 497th career match in today's win over Towson. "I was pleased with our energy level in doubles and we came out quickly on every court. After gaining the doubles point, we did a good job of maintaining momentum into singles play."
Navy won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 match lead. Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) and Dye Das (Jr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) won the first finished match with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory.
"I thought all three doubles teams played pretty well. Even though Erin and Noelle lost, they did a good job controlling play but just have to execute better, particularly at critical times," said Puryear. "I thought Darien and Dye did a great job of establishing the patterns that we wanted them to utilize today. Emani and Stef really stepped up to secure the doubles point for us."
Navy won five-of-six singles matches for the final 6-1 margin. Four of Navy's five victories came in straight sets with freshman Noelle Kaufmann (Westlake, Ohio) winning a three-set match at No. 6 singles.
Darien Sears took a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles to move her overall record to 16-14 and 12-6 in dual-meet play. The victory was her 40th career win.
"Darien played an excellent match. She did a great job finishing the match in the second set," added Puryear.
Emani Decquir was impressive at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nani Lizana. Decquir has won five matches in a row and moved to 18-8 overall and 11-5 in dual-meet play.
"Emani has been locked in mentally and today was no different," said Puryear. "She did a great job against a very difficult opponent today."
Erin Snook (So. / Tampa, Fla.) continued her red-hot play, cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ayana Dow at No. 4 singles. Snook won her eighth straight match and improved to 21-5 overall and a sizzling 17-1 in dual-meet action. She is now 45-17 for her career.
"Erin did a great job starting her match and was able to weather the storm when her opponent got hot in the second set," said Puryear.
Gabby Winter (Fr. / Orlando, Fla.) won a straight-set match at No. 5 singles with 6-3, 6-3 win. Winter won her 23rd match of the season, just one shy of the school record set last year by Sears and Snook. Winter has won eight matches in a row.
"Gabby fought like crazy against an opponent that gave her major problems when they played this past fall. She did a great job today," said Puryear.
Lastly, Noelle Kaufmann won a three-set victory with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 6 singles. Kaufmann ran her winning streak to 13 matches, an ongoing school record and is now 18-5 overall (13-0 in duals).
"Noelle started well and then was able to recover from her second-set loss to triumph in the third," said Puryear.
Navy will close the regular season on Friday when it travels to Norfolk, Va., for a 3:00 PM match at traditional power Old Dominion.
