Women’s Tennis Defeats Loyola on Senior Day, 6-1

April 11, 2018

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s tennis team (25-5, 5-1 PL) posted a 6-1 win over visiting Loyola (13-3, 2-3 PL) on Wednesday on Senior Day at the USNA Varsity Tennis Courts. Navy won its 13th-straight match and tied the program’s single-season record for most wins (25).

Navy’s 13-match winning streak is the second-longest in program history. The longest winning streak in school history is 17 matches. Navy is also 21-1 in its last 22 matches.

“All-in-all it was a good performance,” said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. “We had to deal with the outdoor elements, which makes the match a little bit different. The elements can make it hard. The wind giveth and the wind taketh.”

Navy swept the doubles point and won five of six singles matches.

Sophomores Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya opened doubles play with a 6-1 win over Nicole Eberle and Julie Clark at the No. 3 position. Dervishian and Kahatapitiya won their 12th-straight doubles match and improved to 18-4 in doubles matches this season.

Sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors and senior Claudia Mackenzie then clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Kateri Martin and Amanda Lanciano at the No. 1 court. The doubles pair improved to 21-5 this season.

Freshman Amanda Cyr and junior Catalina Rico closed out the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win over Abigail Thornton and Lin Robertson on the second court.

Senior Carlee Conway opened the singles scoring with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Robertson at the No. 4 position, before sophomore Kaylah Hodge defeated Eberle at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-3.

Sophomore Ansofi Wreder clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Thornton at No. 3 singles.

Junior Josie Rogers defeated Lanciano at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-2. Rogers tied the Navy record with her 13th-consecutive singles victory.

Senior Isabel Balsavage bested Clark at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).

Navy is now 10-0 all-time against Loyola.

“I give Loyola credit,” said Puryear. “They played a very committed match. They came out with some intensity. But you have to expect that when you play a team in conference. It was a good precursor to what we will see at the conference championship next weekend.”

Navy will next compete at the 2018 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Tournament, which will be hosted by Army West Point from April 19-22. The Patriot League Tournament seedings and schedule will be announced next week.

Navy honored its four seniors prior to the match against Loyola on Wednesday. Navy’s four seniors are team captain Amanda Keller, Mackenzie, Conway and Balsavage.
