BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season on Thursday with a 7-0 win over Loyola, Md., in Baltimore.
The win pushed Navy's record to 23-4 overall, setting a new school record for most victories in a season, surpassing the 22 wins during the 2011 season. Loyola falls to 12-6 on the season.
The match was the final contest until next weekend's Patriot League Tournament in West Point, N.Y.
"It was a good match for us to end the regular season with, and to prepare for the Patriot League Tournament," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear, who has guided the Midshipmen to a 43-7 mark over the last two seasons. "I was pleased with singles play and our doubles are still improving. Loyola, Md., really pushed us and made us play every point. It's definitely good to get a win in the regular-season finale, especially in such hard-fought fashion. I feel we are in good shape heading into the tournament, but know we will have to play very well."
The Midshipmen won all three doubles matches, two of them coming in close encounters, to take a 1-0 match lead. Noelle Kaufmann (So. / Westlake, Ohio) and Erin Snook (Jr. / Tampa, Fla.) earned their 11th win of the season with an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Emani Decquir (Sr. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Sam Droop (Fr. / Hilton Head Island, S.C.) earned a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles to wrap up the sweep.
In the first completed doubles match, Darien Sears (Jr. / Silver Spring, Md.) and Stefanie Ton (Sr. / Milpitas, Calif.) had an easier time at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 triumph.
Navy then won five-of-six singles matches in straight sets, including one by default to earn the 7-0 victory.
Sam Droop was given a win by default at No. 6 singles for a 2-0 Navy match lead.
Decquir won her 21st match of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. Sears then won 6-2, 6-1 with a win at No. 3 singles for her 16th win of the season and 12th dual-meet victory.
Ton cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles for her 20th victory of the year, thus becoming the fourth player to reach the 20-win plateau this year.
Freshman Katie Porter (Matthews, N.C.) continued her solid play with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Porter is now 15-3 on the season, all coming during the dual-meet season.
Snook capped off Navy's sweep with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) triumph at No. 2 singles for her 70th career win and 23rd of the season.
Navy will head to West Point, N.Y., for the Patriot League Tournament next weekend, beginning April 26 against a foe to be determined. Navy will likely be the No. 2 seed for the tournament.
