STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Navy women's tennis team reached the finals of one doubles draw and two singles draws at the season-opening Stony Brook Invite, which wrapped up action on Sunday.

The Midshipmen reached the finals in the B flight doubles draw as well as the C and D singles flights. As a whole, the team won seven doubles matches and 21 singles matches in the three-day tournament.

"It was finally good to get out and compete against other players and see where we stand and what needs to be improved," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We accomplished our objectives to go in and play hard and see what happens. We started slowly, especially in singles play, so that is something that we need to address this week.

"I thought we recovered and got very good results in singles play on Saturday," said Puryear. "This is the toughest field that this tournament has had since we have started coming, so it was definitely a very good test for us this weekend. I was also pleased with the way doubles played. The teams are starting to form and it was nice to get good results from doubles play."

Navy's B flight doubles tandem of Logan Antill (Fr. / Butler, Pa.) and Gabby Winter (So. / Orlando, Fla.) won four matches to reach the finals, where the pair eventually lost to a Stony Brook pair in the finals.

Navy's A flight doubles tandem of Emani Decquir (Sr. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Sam Droop (Fr. / Hilton Head Island, S.C.) won a pair of matches before bowing out in the quarterfinals.

In singles play, Winter had a strong run in the C flight, reaching the finals where she lost in three sets to FDU's Chris Nicole. Winter won three matches to reach the finals. Last fall, Winter became the first Navy women's tennis player in school history to win double-figure (10) matches in fall action.

Droop also had success in the D flight, reaching the finals by winning three matches before falling to Stony Brook's Cassandra Dix.

Decquir had success in the consolation bracket of flight B, winning three straight matches to win the consolation bracket.

Antill won three matches in flight D's consolation bracket to win that side of the draw.

Lastly, Dye Das (Sr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) topped Tracy Thorsell (Fr. / Martinsville, Ind.) in the E flight consolation finals.

"I was really proud of how Emani battled back in the B flight and I thought Gabby had a good weekend." said Puryear. "Across the board, I was fairly pleased with the performances. We showed some encouraging signs."

Navy will host the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational next weekend at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex, beginning next Friday and ending Sunday.
