ANNAPOLIS, Md - The Navy women's tennis team won 22 singles matches and eight doubles matches over the three-day Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational this weekend. Matches were played at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium, Navy's outdoor courts, and the indoor Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.

Navy competed against Air Force, Fairleigh Dickinson, George Mason, Loyola, Monmouth, Pittsburgh, St. Bonaventure and Towson at the non-team scored invite.

"I think we showed good improvement over the weekend," head coach Keith Puryear said. "We had a couple teams make the finals and we won the "C" Flight consolation final. We lost a couple tight matches and that's something we'll need to work on. But that's what this part of the season is for: to test ourselves, see where we are and then improve."

Navy was able to get tournament experience for all 16 players on its roster this weekend and the team played a combined 57 singles and doubles matches.

"To be at home and to be able to watch all of them play was great," said Puryear. "We also had great support from our Navy fans this weekend."

Sophomore Katie Porter (Matthews, N.C.) advanced to the semifinals of the "B" Flight singles draw. Porter defeated Haleigh Morgus of Loyola, 8-3, in a feeder match before taking down Marijke Boers of George Mason, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) in the first round and George Mason's Ashley Delaney, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Porter fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Shreya Pasricha, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) in the semifinals.

Porter also advanced to the finals of the "A" Doubles draw with senior Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.). The duo defeated St. Bonaventure's Marissa Brossard and Mara Martinez, 8-3, in the first round, Pittsburgh's Molly Wickman and Jocelyn Lu in the quarterfinals, 9-7, and Air Force's Tiffany Tran and Jocelle Rudico in the semifinals, 8-4. Porter and Snook fell to Air Force's Natasha Rizvi and Marcelli Magday in the championship on Sunday morning, 8-2. Snook also went 2-1 in singles play in the "A" Flight.

Freshman Rozel Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) went 3-1 in "C" Flight singles to win the consolation bracket. After falling in the first round of the main draw, Hernandez won three matches in the back draw, including an 8-6 win over classmate Summer Ralston (Roswell, Ga.) in the consolation final, 8-6. Ralston fell in the first round of the main draw but went on to win two consolation matches before falling to Hernandez.

Sophomore Sam Droop (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) went 2-2 in the "A" Flight, advancing to the consolation finals. Hernandez and Droop were 2-1 playing together in the "A" Flight doubles bracket. Freshman Allie Pavlansky (Austintown, Ohio) went 3-2 in the "D" Flight.

Fairleigh Dickinson's Ksenija Tihomorova won the "A" Flight, FDU's Shreya Pasricha won the "B" Flight, Pittsburgh's Audrey Ann Blakely won the "C" Flight and Pitt's Lolade Ogundbesan won the "D" Flight. Pitt's Kimmy Borza and Blakely won the "B" Flight doubles.

Navy will have two weeks off before its next competition, which will be the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational from October 11-13.
