Winter Reaches Finals in Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational
Sept. 25, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Gabby Winter reached the finals of the Flight B singles bracket to cap off a strong tournament for the Navy women's tennis team. The Midshipmen had five players competing in today's semifinal round.
"I like our improvement from last week to this weekend, but we still have a lot of room to get better," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We let some matches slip through our fingers today. Our challenge is to continue the progress we are making and continue to work hard."
Navy had five players competing in the semifinal round today, but just one advanced to the finals. Freshman Gabby Winter (Orlando, Fla.) reached the finals for the second straight weekend, defeating Towson's Andrea Samlin, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinal round. She then fell in the B Flight finals to Towson's Nisha Shah, 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) fell in the A Flight singles bracket. Sears lost a three-set heartbreaker in the semifinals after winning the first set, 6-0.
Erin Snook (So. / Tampa, Fla.) also fell in heartbreaking fashion in the B Flight semifinals, dropping a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (12-10) score to Towson's Nisha Shah.
Lastly in the Flight D semifinals, Julia Zook (So. / Seattle, Wash.) fell to Towson's Judy Mont, 6-3, 7-5.
"All in all, it was a good weekend. We were pleased with our effort but not satisfied," said Puryear. "We have two weeks until our next action, so we will continue to work and get better."
