Women's Tennis to Host Penn State in Dual Season Opener on Sunday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s tennis team (0-0) will host Big Ten-member Penn State (0-0) in its spring dual season opener on Sunday at 11:00 am at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex. Admission is free for all Navy women’s tennis matches.
Senior captain Amanda Keller enters the spring dual season ranked third at Navy in career singles wins (77-48), fourth in career doubles wins (55-28) and third in career combined wins (132). Keller needs 20 combined wins to become the school record holder for combined wins with 152. Erin Snook, a 2014 graduate, had 151 career combined wins.
Keller has been named to the All-Patriot League Team in each of her first three seasons at Navy.
Keller and senior Carlee Conway shared the team lead for most singles wins during the fall tournament season with nine apiece. Freshman Amanda Cyr and sophomore Aimee Dervishian each won eight singles matches in the fall.
Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge won a team-best eight doubles matches during the fall tournament season.
Navy is competing for the first time since the ITA Atlantic Regional in October. The Mids competed in a total of five events in the fall and won nine flights (six singles flights and three doubles flights).
Keller was Navy’s lone representative at the historic Milwaukee Tennis Classic, where she went 3-1.
Navy currently has 25 dual matches on its spring schedule and 21 of those 25 matches are to be played at home.
Navy’s first Patriot League dual match will be at four-time reigning league champion Boston University on Sunday, Feb. 4. Navy will host Army West Point in the Army-Navy Star Match on Saturday, March 31.
Navy and Penn State are playing for the third time in series history. Penn State defeated Navy, 7-0, in both 2014 and 2017. Both matches were played at Penn State.
The Mids and the Nittany Lions met in one doubles match during the 2017 fall tournament season. Penn State’s Frederikke Svarre and Hanna Wikberg defeated Keller and Hodge, 8-5, in the round of 32 of the main doubles draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech.
Penn State was 6-15 overall last season and 3-8 in Big Ten matches.
Navy will next host St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis on Saturday, Jan. 20.
