Navy Women's Tennis Continues Homestand Sunday With Two More Matches
Feb. 22, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Coming off one of its best weekends in school history, the Navy women's tennis team looks to remain red-hot with a pair of matches on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex in Annapolis.
Navy will host Drexel at noon and Seton Hall at 3:00 PM on Sunday. Drexel enters the weekend with a 4-0 spring record, while Seton Hall is 0-4 having lost to nationally-ranked Princeton, as well as Army, NJIT and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Navy owns a 2-0 series advantage against Drexel, topping the Dragons in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The Midshipmen are 2-1 against Seton Hall, falling to the Pirates in 2010, but winning in each of the last two seasons.
Seven players have won at least five dual-meet matches this spring, helping Navy to a 10-3 start and an eight-match winning streak, which is tied for the third longest in school history and just three wins shy of the school-record 11 wins to start the 2012 season. Senior Stefanie Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) and juniors Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) and Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.) lead the way with six dual-meet victories. Emani Decquir (Sr. / Sacramento, Calif.), Sam Droop (Fr. / Hilton Head Island, S.C.), Logan Antill (Fr. / Butler, Pa.) and Katie Porter (Fr. / Matthews, N.C.) each have five dual-meet victories, with Porter being undefeated at 5-0.
Antil paces the Midshipmen overall with 17 victories, good for ninth on the single-season wins list at Navy. Snook, the school-record holder in career victories (62), is second on the squad with 16 wins and owns a sterling 45-11 career dual-meet mark. Decquir owns 13 wins this year and Droop and Ton have contributed 12 victories.
Only Antill and Sears have won more than three dual-meet matches on the doubles side, owning a 5-3 record mostly at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. A pair of Indiana natives, freshnmen Mikaela Carlson (Carmel, Ind.) and Tracy Thorsell (Martinsville, Ind.) are 3-2 in doubles action. The Midshipmen have lost the doubles point in five of their 13 matches so far this spring, including three of the last six.
Decquir (108), Ton (103) and Snook (102) all have gone over the 100-career combined victory plateau this spring.
Navy returns to action next Saturday (March 2), when it hosts Howard at 2:00 PM at the Brigade Sports Complex.
