Navy Women's Tennis Returns Home For Three Matches
March 20, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team returns home for the first time in almost three weeks to host three matches this week at the Brigade Sports Complex. The Mids host Delaware on Thursday (2:00 PM), before beginning Patriot League play Saturday against Bucknell (2:30 PM) and Sunday against Colgate (10:00 AM).
Navy enters the Delaware match riding a school-record 14-match winning streak and with a 16-3 overall record. Delaware is 5-1 with wins over Morgan State (6-1), Rutgers (4-3), Lehigh (7-0), Saint Joseph's and Villanova (7-0), while losing to UMBC (4-3). This will be the third meeting between the two squads, with Delaware winning in 2011 (5-2) and Navy winning last year (4-3).
The Midshipmen are 4-2 all-time against Bucknell, winning each of their last four matches against the Bison including that came in the last two Patriot League Tournaments. Navy is 2-0 against Colgate, defeating the Raiders in both the 2011 (6-1) and 2012 (7-0) seasons.
During the regular season, Navy is 9-1 against Patriot League foes having won nine straight matches. The Midshipmen's lone loss was a 6-1 loss to Bucknell in the program's first Patriot League match in school history during the 2010 season.
Five players have recorded at least 14 singles victories, led by freshman Logan Antill's (Butler, Pa.) 19 wins. The 19 victories are already tied for the sixth most in school history, while Antill's .679 (19-9) winning percentage is also the sixth-best single-season percentage in school history. Antill owns a 7-4 dual-meet record.
Freshman Sam Droop (Hilton, Head Island, S.C.) is 15-9 overall and is tied for the team lead in dual-meet victories with eight. Junior Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.) is 15-10 overall, while seniors Dye Das (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Emani Decquir (Sacramento, Calif.) have 14 wins each. Freshmen Katie Porter (Matthews, N.C.) and junior Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) also share the team lead with eight dual-meet wins.
The Midshipmen own a sterling 81-33 (.711) record in dual-meet singles action, including a 33-5 (.868) combined record at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions.
In doubles play, the duo of Antill and Sears own an 8-4 dual-meet record to easily pace the Midshipmen. The tandems of Decquir and Droop and Mikaela Carlson (Fr. / Carmel, Ind.) and Tracy Thorsell (Fr. / Martinsville, Ind.) have also won four dual meets each. The three tandems are the only duos to win more than two dual meets this spring.
Following this week's action, Navy will have Easter weekend off before traveling to West Point to take on Army on Saturday, April 7, at 9:00 AM. It will be the team's first dual meet contest in series history.
