ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team hits the road for its first true away matches of the season this weekend when it faces Bucknell on Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa., and Colgate on Sunday in Hamilton, N.Y. It will be the Patriot League opener for the Midshipmen, who opened the season with 13 straight home matches from Jan. 21-March 9 and then played two neutral-site matches in Florida last week during Spring Break.
The Midshipmen enter the match with a 14-1 overall record while Bucknell is 2-9 overall and Colgate is 3-9 overall. It will be the Patriot League openers for all three squads.
Navy hasn't played in a span of 10 days since a 4-3 win over Long Island University in Orlando, Fla., on March 14. The Midshipmen started the season 11-0 before falling to George Washington, 6-1, on March 4, but has since won three close, competitive matches. The Midshipmen defeated Delaware (4-3), Quinnipiac (5-2) and Long Island (4-3), rallying for the victory after dropping the crucial doubles point in all three matches. Navy has lost the doubles point in six of its 14 team victories this season.
Navy has been dominant all season long in singles play, owning a 70-20 (.778) record in dual matches. Leading Navy's attack is sophomore Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.), junior Stefanie Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) and freshman Noelle Kaufmann (Westlake, Ohio). The trio has combined for a 30-2 (.938) record in dual meets this season, highlighted by Snook's 12-1 mark mostly coming at No. 4 singles (16-5 overall). Ton is 10-1 at No. 3 singles (14-7 overall) and Kaufmann is 8-0 at No. 6 singles (13-5 overall).
Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) will likely play the No. 1 position, owning an 8-5 dual-meet record and is 12-13 overall. Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) is 6-5 in dual meets at No. 2 singles and 13-8 overall. Freshman Gabby Winter (Orlando, Fla.) is 7-3 at No. 5 singles and leads Navy with 18 overall victories which is tied for the fourth most in a season in school history.
On the career chart, Ton leads with 41 career victories while Sears and Decquir are tied for second with 40 career wins.
Navy's likely doubles tandems include Decquir and Ton (7-7) at No. 1 and Kaufmann and Snook (8-5) at No. 2. The third doubles slot is up in the air and could be filled by Sears and Abby Shewalter (Fr. / Winchester, Mass.), Natalie Houle (Jr. / The Woodlands, Texas) and Caitlin Olsen (So. / Los Gatos, Calif.) or Sears and Dye Das (Jr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.).
Navy and Bucknell are tied in the all-time series both with two wins apiece. The Bison defeated Navy twice during the 2010 season, before Navy turned the tables last year, defeating Bucknell in both the regular season and Patriot League Tournament. The Midshipmen defeated the Bison in the Patriot League semifinals last April, 4-2, in a match that took almost four-and-a-half hours to complete.
Navy owns a 1-0 series advantage against Colgate, defeating the Raiders, 6-1, last year in Annapolis.
Navy is 5-1 against Patriot League opponents in the regular season and 8-3 all-time against Patriot League opposition, tournament included. The Midshipmen have won five straight matches in the regular season against Patriot League foes.
Navy will return home next weekend to face Lafayette (March 31) and Lehigh (April 1) in Annapolis.
