Navy Women's Tennis Hosts Howard in Mid-Week Match
April 4, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After wrapping up Patriot League play last weekend, the Navy women's tennis team will continue its season on Thursday when it hosts Howard at 3:00 PM at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy enters the match as winners of seven straight matches and with an 18-1 overall record. Howard's record is not available.
The Midshipmen are coming off a weekend sweep of the Lehigh Valley schools, defeating Lafayette (7-0) on Saturday and taking down Lehigh (6-1) on Sunday. Of Navy's 18 wins this year, 11 of them have been by scores of 6-1 or 7-0. In addition, Navy has won the doubles point in three straight matches after dropping the doubles point in the six previous matches from Feb. 26 to March 24.
Several Midshipmen have had spectacular seasons, highlighted currently by Noelle Kaufmann (Fr. / Westlake, Ohio). Kaufmann is currently sporting a school-record 12-match winning streak, owning a 12-0 dual-meet mark and a 17-5 record overall. She is aided by Erin Snook (Jr. / Tampa, Fla.), who stands 20-5 overall, 16-1 in dual-meet action and has won seven straight matches. Snook, Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) and Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) share the school record for career victories at 44 each.
Gabby Winter (Fr. / Orlando, Fla.) leads Navy with 22 victories and has won seven straight matches while owning a 12-5 dual-meet record. She needs just two wins to set the school record for single-season victories set last year by Darien Sears (Jr. / Silver Spring, Md.) and Snook at 24 wins apiece.
Other Navy regulars include Ton (17-8 overall / 13-2 duals), Decquir (17-8 overall / 10-5 duals) and Sears (15-14 overall / 11-6 duals).
Navy owns a 92-22 (.807) record during dual-meet action in singles play, including a sizzling 22-2 (.917) against Patriot League opponents. Navy is 35-22 (.614) in doubles play and 8-4 (.667) against Patriot League foes. The pairing of Kaufmann and Snook have Navy's top doubles record with a 15-12 mark.
This will be the third meeting between the two squads. Howard, the MEAC favorite, won a 7-0 decision in 2010, while Navy took a 4-3 victory a year ago.
Navy will close out its home season next Wednesday, April 11, at 3:00 PM against Towson. The regular-season finale will be Friday, April 13, at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
