ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The No. 3 Navy women's tennis team (20-7, 5-1 PL) will begin play at the Patriot League Tournament in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 4:00 PM against No. 6 Loyola (7-6-1, 1-3 PL). Bucknell is the host of the 2014 Patriot League Tournament.
The winner of the Navy-Loyola quarterfinal match will play the winner of No. 2 Army-No. 7 Colgate in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:00 PM. Saturday's semifinal winners will meet for the 2014 Patriot League Championship and NCAA berth on Sunday at 12 noon.
Navy will be seeking a fourth straight appearance in the tournament final. Navy is 6-4 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament and is 4-0 in its opening match of the tournament. Navy and Loyola will meet for the first time in the Patriot League Tournament.
Boston University (11-6, 2-0 PL) earned the tournament's No. 1 seed in its first season in the Patriot League. The Terriers only played two league matches, but their 7-0 win over Army (21-3, 7-1 PL) was enough to secure the top seed. Army, the No. 2 seed, has won the last nine Patriot League Tournaments and had won 65 straight conference matches before the loss to Boston.
Navy's quarterfinal contest against Loyola will be a rematch of Sunday's regular-season finale, in which the Mids defeated the Greyhounds, 7-0. Navy won two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and won all six singles matches. Navy won four of the six singles matches in straight sets and the win over Loyola was Navy's 100th win in program history.
Senior Erin Snook is Navy's No. 1 singles player and she holds school records for most career singles wins (90), doubles wins (60) and combined wins (150). Snook is 19-9 overall this season and is 15-5 at No. 1 singles. Snook went 6-0 against Patriot League opponents this season and she has won seven straight singles matches.
Senior captain Darien Sears plays at No. 2 singles. Sears has an overall record of 18-11 this season and is 10-7 at the No. 2 position. Sears ranks second to Snook in school history in career singles wins (78).
Sophomore Sam Droop
leads Navy in wins with her overall record of 21-10 and she has a dual record of 17-4. Droop is Navy's No. 3 singles player and has won eight straight matches. Like Snook, Droop went 6-0 against conference opponents this season.
Junior Gabby Winter has seen the most action as Navy's No. 4 singles player. Winter is 14-10 overall and 9-2 in dual play.
Head coach Keith Puryear has used a number of different players at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions this season and will have plenty of options for the Patriot League Tournament. Junior Noelle Kaufmann is 6-12 overall and 5-10 in dual play and sophomore Logan Antill is 7-10 overall and 5-7 in duals.
Puryear has also used sophomore Katie Porter in the singles lineup. Porter is 16-7 overall and 9-2 in duals. Porter has won seven straight matches and she is 9-1 over her last 10. Sophomore Mikaela Carlson is 8-6 overall and 7-3 in dual play, while freshman Audrey Channell is 11-6 overall and 7-3 in duals.
Navy has won the doubles point in seven out of its last eight matches, after winning the doubles point in just nine of its first 19 matches of the season.
The Patriot League Tournament will begin Thursday with No. 8 Lafayette vs. No. 9 Holy Cross and the winner will take on No. 1 Boston U. The Navy-Loyola match on Friday will be the fourth quarterfinal match of the day.
