ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team has been named the top seed for the upcoming Patriot League Tournament, held this weekend in Bethlehem, Pa., on the campus of Lehigh University. Navy's first action will come in the semifinals at 10:00 AM on Saturday morning.
Navy enters the tournament with a 19-2 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark against Patriot League opposition. The Midshipmen have won eight of their last nine matches entering the weekend, including a stretch of matches against league opponents in which Navy won by a combined margin of 25-3.
The Midshipmen were the No. 3 seed in the team's first season of varsity competition and the No. 2 seed a year ago. The No. 1 seed has come in Navy's third season of varsity play.
All six of Navy's dual-meet starters own at least 11 dual-meet victories and 16 wins overall. The six are a combined 22-2 against Patriot League opposition in singles play.
Navy will face the winner of fourth-seeded Lehigh amd fifth-seeded Bucknell on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM. Navy has defeated both teams this year, topping Lehigh by a 6-1 advantage and Bucknell by a 5-2 score.
Army (19-6, 5-0 PL) earns the second seed and enters the weekend having won seven straight Patriot League championships. The Black Knights defeated Navy in last year's championship match, 4-0, in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The two squads did not meet in this year's regular season.
Colgate is the third seed and is followed by Lehigh, Bucknell, Lafayette and Holy Cross. Seed numbers 1-5 were determined by the ITA national rankings.
The top-seeded Midshipmen will not play in Friday's quarterfinal round, receiving a bye.
