ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy women's tennis senior Stefanie Ton was named the Atlantic Region's recipient for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, the organization announced recently. With the accolade, Ton became a finalist for the national award which was announced yesterday and won by Air Force's Hannah Dake.

The award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award, which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Not only an standout tennis player on the court, Ton was an outstanding student and volunteer at the Naval Academy. Ton completed her academic career with a 3.22 cumulative GPA and was named to the Superintendent's List in each of the last two semesters, the Commandant's List in each of the last six semesters and the Dean's List twice. Over the last six semesters, she raised her GPA almost half a point from a 2.74 GPA after her freshman year to a final GPA of 3.22.

Off the court, Ton has spent countless hours as a volunteer and in extracirricular activities. In the summer of 2012, Ton took a Language, Regional Expertise and Culture Immersion trip to Vietnam and Cambodia where she did community-service projects and learned about the culture. She participated in a "Mids For Kids Program", where she visits a special needs school every Monday afternoon.

At the Naval Academy, Ton participated in the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference and completed extensive research on an independent project titled "Poverty in East Asian and Pacific Countries". She served as a squad leader during the 2012 fall semester and was the No. 1-ranked Midshipman performer in Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) participation. She was also a logistics representative for monthly team captain seminars.

Ton just wrapped up an outstanding career for the Midshipmen. As a four-year starter, Ton, a Milpitas, Calif., native, compiled a 65-42 career singles record to rank third on the all-time wins list at Navy. She served as the 2013 team captain and was a two-time all-Patriot League performer and the 2012 Patriot League Player of the Month in February.

Ton received the Marine Ground service assignment and will report to the Basic School (TBS) in August.
