ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy women's tennis coach Keith Puryear released the names of the 2011 Navy women's tennis recruits on Thursday as five prospects representing four states went through induction ceremonies and have begun plebe summer.

"We have a very solid group. This group gives us a very good nucleus and they fit in very well with our previous classes," said 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year Keith Puryear. "All of them will challenge for starting positions and the competition will make us better. We are really looking forward to working with them and to keep moving our program forward."

The class features one four-star player and four three-star players according to the website, TennisRecruiting.net, which also placed Navy in the honorable mention portion of the top mid-major classes in the country. Last year's class was ranked 25th by the same site and featured two four-star and one three-star player.

Navy will open the 2011-12 season at the Stony Brook Invitational on Sept. 16-18 in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Noelle Kaufmann • 5-5 • Westlake, Ohio • Magnificat
Kaufmann was a four-time letterwinner in tennis from Magnificat High School, graduating in 2011 ... led team to the 2007 and 2009 Ohio State Championship ... served as the team captain and was named team MVP as a senior ... won the "Golden Racket" scholar-athlete award four times ... was the recipient of the Coaches Award as a sophomore at Magnificat ... was a five-time district qualifier in singles or doubles ... two-time winner of the Lady Viking Invitational and a three-time winner of the Rocky River tournament ... a three-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, Kaufmann was ranked fifth in the state of Ohio ... finished career with a 113-21 record ... was a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, was a school ambassador and a youth challenge volunteer ... full name is Noelle Renee Kaufmann ... born April 22, 1993 ... daughter of Phil Kaufmann ... father, Phil, played tennis at Case Western Reserve for one year and Youngstown State for two ... carried a 4.2 GPA in high school and plans to study medicine while at the Academy.

Shewalter graduated in 2011 from Winchester High School, earning three letters in tennis ... led team to three straight state championships from 2009-11, and was part of a Winchester program that has won 114 straight matches and five straight Division 2 state titles ... team went 23-0 during her junior year and 22-0 in 2011 ... served as the team captain at Winchester ... was a three-time all-scholastic honoree by the Boston Globe ... was undefeated (17-0) as a junior at No. 1 singles, losing just 15 games during her 17 matches ... ranked No. 3 in New England in singles play ... reached the semifinals of the prestigious North Tennis Championship as a senior ... four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net ... was a member of the symphony in high school ... full name is Abigail Shewalter ... born September 9, 1992 ... daughter of Tom Shewalter.
