ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy women's tennis head coach Keith Puryear has announced that five members of the Class of 2017 are currently participating in plebe summer activities and have joined the Navy women's tennis program for the upcoming 2013-14 season.

"We are looking forward to having a opportunity to work with this year's freshman class. We feel they all have great promise and expect each to grow, so that they might contribute to our program's continued success," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear, who is entering his sixth year at Navy with a stellar 80-22 overall record as the head coach of the Midshipmen.

Two players hail from California, while the states of North Carolina, Ohio and Georgia each have one representative. Navy's roster now features four student-athletes from talent-laden California and two each from the traditionally-strong states of North Carolina, Ohio, Georgia, Indiana and Florida.

Navy posted a school-record 25 wins with a Patriot League Tournament runner-up finish a year ago, but must replace three players that accounted for 178 career singles victories, including 2013 Patriot League Player of the Year Emani Decquir and all-Patriot League selection Stefanie Ton.

Audrey Channell | 5-10 | Cary, N.C. | Green Hope High School
A four-year letterwinner in tennis, Channell graduated in 2013 from Green Hope High School ... led team to four conference titles and was a three-time team captain and team MVP ... a three-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, Channell was ranked fifth in the state of North Carolina ... also picked up an offer from UNC Wilmington ... was a member of Student Council and Young Life ... born August 12, 1995, in Cary, N.C. ... daughter of Dean and Kathy Channell ... father, Dean, played tennis at Virginia Tech and mother, Kathy, played at Grove City College ... enjoys playing the guitar.

 

 

Sophia Costes | 5-2 | Murrieta, Calif. | Murrieta Valley
Lettered four times in tennis, once in golf and once in lacrosse at Murrieta Valley High School, graduating in 2013 ... was a two-time league MVP, team captain and league doubles champion ... while at Cathedral Catholic as a freshman, Costes helped the team to the CIF Team Championship ... then at Rancho Bernardo High School as a sophomore, Costes teamed up to win the CIF doubles championship ... was a four-time scholar-athlete honoree ... was an International Baccalaureate full diploma graduate and a member of Stake Youth Council ... born Feb. 2, 1995 ... daughter of Micheline Costes ... uncle, Pete Fyles, graduated from the Academy in 1980 ... took a six-week summer service trip to Guatemala in 2012.

Rozel Hernandez | 5-2 | San Diego, Calif. | La Jolla
A 2013 graduate of La Jolla High School, Hernandez lettered four times in tennis ... led La Jolla to the 2012 CIF Division II team title and the 2010 Western League Championship ... was the 2012 Western League Athlete of the Year and all-CIF first-team selection ... was the 2011 Western League doubles champion and the individual singles champion in 2010 ... served as the team captain as a senior ... a three-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net ... won the Jean Kremm Sportsmanship Award ... maintained a 4.00 GPA in high school and was the former president of the Volunteer-in-Action Club and volunteered in the last presidential election as a poll worker ... born June 16, 1995, in San Diego, Calif. ... daughter of Rolando and Hazel Ann Hernandez ... played ITF women's circuit tennis in Europe and Northern Africa during the 2010 and 2011 summers.

Allie Pavlansky | 5-11 | Austintown, Ohio | Canfield
Pavlansky graduated from Canfield High School in 2013, picking up four letters in both tennis and basketball ... led tennis team to four AAC Championships and was a three-time state qualifier and four-time team MVP ... was selected as the Youngstown Vindicator Player of the Year four times ... visited George Mason, Mary Washington and Akron on recruiting visits ... led basketball team to the district title and regional runner-up finish as a senior ... was the Student Council treasurer and a member of National Honor Society and Key Club ... born November 8, 1994, in Youngstown, Ohio ... daughter of Patrick and Karen Pavlansky ... played for her father, Pat, on the hardwood at Canfield High School.

Summer Ralston | 5-7 | Roswell, Ga. | Roswell
Ralston graduated in 2013, lettering three times in tennis at Roswell High School ... led Roswell to the 2012 state title ... a four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, Ralston was ranked as high as 116th in the country ... went on recruiting visits to Army and Air Force before choosing on Navy ... born November 18, 1994 ... daughter of Scott and Claudia Ralston.
