Women's Tennis to Host Moore Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis program will host the first of two home fall tournaments this weekend with the fifth annual Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational running from Friday through Sunday. The tournament will be contested at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium (outdoor) and the Tose Family Tennis Center (indoor) courts at the Brigade Sports Complex.

Play will begin at noon on Friday with Saturday and Sunday featuring 9 am starts. There will be four singles flights and two doubles flights. The "A" doubles flights and "A" and "B" singles flights will be played at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium. The "B" doubles flights and the "C" and "D" singles flights will be played at the Tose Family Tennis Center as 12 courts will be used simultaneously.

Joining Navy at the Moore Invitational will be Air Force, Fairleigh Dickinson, George Mason, Loyola, Monmouth, Pittsburgh, St. Bonaventure and Towson.

Navy opened its 2013 fall schedule by competing in a pair of tournaments last weekend. The Mids competed at the Stony Brook Invitational and the Quinnipiac Invitational.

Freshman Audrey Channell (Cary, N.C.) went 3-1 in singles play in the "D" flight at Stony Brook. She won a play-in game into the main draw then won in the first round and quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals.

Sophomore Mikaela Carlson (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Noelle Kaufmann (Westlake, Ohio) posted a 3-1 record in the "A" doubles draw at Quinnipiac. The duo lost in the first round, but went on to go 3-0 to take the consolation bracket.

Senior captain Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) went 2-1 in the "A" flight at Quinnipiac to increase her career record to 62-37. Senior Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.) won a quarterfinal match in the "A" draw at Stony Brook to increase her school-record win total to 72 (72-39). Both Sears (second team) and Snook (first team) earned All-Patriot League honors last spring.



At the 2012 Moore Invitational, junior Gabby Winter (Orlando, Fla.) defeated teammate Logan Antill (Butler, Pa.) in the finals of the "B" draw, 6-2, 6-0. Additionally, Winter and Antill teamed up to win the "B" draw of the doubles flight.

Navy will have two weeks off before its next competition, which will be the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational from October 11-13.
