Women’s Tennis to Compete at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s tennis program will have two singles players and two doubles teams competing at the ITA Atlantic Regional beginning this Friday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The singles and doubles draw winners will receive automatic berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Ansofi Wreder will be competing in singles play, while Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge, as well as senior Claudia Mackenzie and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors, will be competing in doubles.
Mackenzie and Louie-Meadors will begin doubles play in the Round of 64 against Mount St. Mary’s Alexa Quintanilla and Megan Gamble on Friday at 1:00 PM. The winner of the match will face No. 14 Emily Dunbar and Dessislava Zlateva of Richmond on Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Round of 32.
Keller and Hodge are seeded 16th in the doubles draw and have received a bye for the opening Round of 64. Keller and Hodge will play their first match in the Round of 32 against the winner of Penn State’s Frederikke Svarre and Hannah Wikberg vs. Richmond’s Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig. Keller and Hodge’s Round of 32 match will be played on Saturday at 9:00 AM.
Keller and Hodge finished the 2017 season ranked ninth in the ITA Atlantic Region doubles rankings.
In singles play, Keller will begin her tournament in the main draw Round of 64 against Liberty’s Ashley Bongart on Saturday.
Wreder is in the qualifying singles draw and will face Georgetown’s Drew Spinosa on Friday at 9:00 AM. Wreder will have to win two qualifying matches to advance to the main draw.
Friday’s schedule will feature the two rounds of singles qualifying and the Round of 64 of doubles play. Saturday’s action will feature the Round of 32 and the Round of 16 doubles matches and the Round of 64 main draw singles. Sunday’s competition will feature the quarterfinal round of doubles and both the Round of 32 and the Round of 16 singles matches. Monday will see the semifinal and final of doubles play, as well as the quarterfinals of singles. Tuesday’s slate will see the conclusion of the tournament with the semifinal and final of singles.
Last season, Keller won her opening singles match in the Round of 64 at the ITA Atlantic Regional, before falling in the Round of 32. She also advanced to the Round of 32 as a freshman in 2014. Keller is making a fourth straight appearance at the ITA Atlantic Regional.
Mackenzie and Louie-Meadors also return to the ITA Atlantic Regional as a doubles pairing. The duo won two matches in the doubles bracket last fall before falling in the Round of 16.
Keller leads Navy in singles wins this season with her 9-3 record, while Wreder is 3-3 in singles play. Keller and Hodge are 8-2 in doubles play, while Mackenzie and Louie-Meadors are 6-2 in doubles action.
Keller won the A singles flight at Navy’s Moore Invitational, while also teaming with Hodge to win the A doubles flight. Keller also won three singles matches at the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic earlier this fall.
Navy will be joined in the Atlantic Region tournament by players from Delaware, Duquesne, George Washington, Georgetown, Hampton, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Maryland, Mount St. Mary’s, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Radford, Richmond, Saint Joseph’s, Towson, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and William & Mary.
The ITA Atlantic Regional is Navy's final competition of the fall season. Navy will open the spring dual season at home against Penn State on Jan. 14.
