LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy men's and women's indoor track and field teams kicked off the 2012 Patriot League Indoor Championships with the multi-events on Friday at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse. Both teams are the defending Patriot League champions.

The women completed the five-event pentathlon on Friday and then men conducted four of the seven heptathlon events. The men will complete the final three heptathlon events (60m hurdles, pole vault, 1,000m) on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 am. Navy currently sits in fifth place with three points after one event on the women's side.

Junior Melanie Sluzewicz placed fifth in the pentathlon with 3,159 points to earn two team points and senior Arian Davis placed sixth in the event with 3,063 points for one team point. Both athletes suffered injuries in the long jump event, the fourth of five events on the day, but were able to finish the competition and score valuable team points for Navy.

"They really showed a team-first, warrior mentality to complete the 800 and I am very, very proud of them," head coach Carla Criste said. "They were able to pull through mentally and despite the injuries they muscled through and were able to still get points for the team."

Sluzewicz placed second in the high jump with a clear of 5-3¾ (1.62m) to earn 759 points. It was a solid boost for Sluzewicz who began the day in 10th place, taking just 589 points in the 60m hurdles after running a 10.69. Sluzewicz moved into sixth place after the high jump and stayed there after posting a mark of 33-2 (10.11m) in the third event of the day, the shot put. Sluzewicz had the fourth-best shot put mark in the field.

Sluzewicz registered the second best long jump mark in the fourth event of the day. She made a leap of 17-0¾ (5.20m) to score 614 points and strengthen her position among the top six. Sluzewicz placed third in the 800m to jump one spot to fifth in the final standings with 3,159 total points, the ninth-best pentathlon performance in school history.

Davis, the defending pentathlon champion, placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.56, earning 796 points. Davis followed that with another fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-2½ (1.59) to earn 724 points. Davis continued to gain ground in the shot put, placing second amongst the pentathletes with a mark of 35-6¾ (10.84m).

Davis moved into third place after the long jump, where she made a mark of 17-0½ (5.19m) to take 612 points in the event, but suffered a hamstring injury. The injury took its toll on Davis in the 800m run and she placed last in the event with a time of 3:02.09 (346 points) and fell from third to sixth in the standings with 3,063 total points.

Brooke Astor of Lehigh won the pentathlon with 3,450 points, moving past Lafayette's Stephanie Hazlett in the last event (800m). Hazlett took second with 3,331 points. Astor placed third in the pentathlon as a freshman in 2011.

On the men's side, Navy juniors Rand Montermini and Chris Fowler are nearly even in the heptathlon after four events. Montermini used a late surge in the high jump to finish the day in fifth place with 2,606 points and Fowler is currently in sixth with 2,604 points with three events to go.

Montermini began the day in fourth place in the heptathlon with a time of 7.37 (755 pts) in the 60m dash. He followed that with an eighth-place showing in the long jump of 20-2½ (6.16m) for 621 points. Montermini then dropped a bit after finishing 12th in the shot put with a mark of 30-1 (9.71m) for 436 points. He was in ninth place after the first three events.

Montermini battled back in the high jump, clearing 6-6¼ (1.99m) to garner 794 points. The clear of 6-6¼ was the second best in the heptathlon field and move him up to fifth place with 2,606 total points after the four events.

Fowler started the heptathlon with a 7.50 in the 60m dash, taking 713 points with the seventh-fastest time. Fowler then moved up quickly in the next two events, the long jump and the shot put. Fowler had the third-best long jump effort, amassing 677 points for a distance of 21-0½ (6.41m). Fowler then topped the field in the shot put, getting off a personal record, first-place throw of 39-3 (11.96m) to score 604 points and move up to third place after three events.

Fowler earned 610 points by clearing 5-10 (1.78m) in the high jump, the final event on Friday. Fowler dropped to sixth place after the high jump to conclude the first day of the multi-events just two points behind his teammate Montermini. Fowler, who is the final scoring spot at No. 6, is 15 points ahead of Army's Michael Bliss.

Bucknell's Andrew Powell, the 2011 heptathlon champion, finished the day in first place with 2,921 points. Powell had the day's top efforts in the long jump (22-3½, 6.79m) and high jump (6-8¾, 2.05m).

Saturday's schedule will feature the finals of the weight throw, long jump, high jump, 5,000m run and 4x800m relay. The prelims of the 60m dash, 200m dash and 60m hurdles will also be held, as well as the rest of the heptathlon. Live results will be available all weekend at navysports.com(.)
