LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy women's indoor track and field team (21-1) won three individual events on the second day of the 2012 Patriot League Indoor Championships at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. After six events, Navy sits in first place with 56 team points. The finals of the remaining 14 events will be held on Sunday. The Mids won the team title in 2011.

"We had a great first day and the team really came together," head coach Carla Criste said. "I couldn't be more proud of Brigid Byrne for her performance in the 5,000 and Veronica Ffrench was awesome in the high jump. Also, Amanda Phelps looked great in the weight throw. Our team was really motivated today and we had some great PRs."

Navy's 4x800m relay team of Shannon Cuthbert, Natasha Druggan, Mansfield Murph and Jess Palacio ran the third best time in school history and placed fourth in the event at 9:05.17.

Senior Amanda Phelps successfully defending her weight throw title by winning the event with a new personal record. Phelps made a first-place mark of 58-9¼ (17.91m, ECAC), the fifth-best throw in Navy history, to earn 10 team points. Phelps won the event by a foot.



Sophomore Maressa Guynn also scored in the weight throw, placing sixth with a PR throw of 52-2½ (15.91m). Phelps and Guynn combined for 11 points in the weight throw.

Junior Brigid Byrne claimed her first career league title, winning the 5,000m run with a time of 17:08.16. Byrne took off on the final two laps, running them in 70 seconds, and won by over five seconds. Due to Bucknell's track specifications, Byrne's time will be converted to a 17:03.16 for national rankings and the time is a PR and the second best time in school history.

Senior Katie Taylor helped Navy garner 12 team points from the 5,000m as she placed fifth with a time of 17:48.29. Both Byrne and Taylor will run in the 3K on Sunday.

Sophomore Veronica Ffrench won the high jump event on Saturday to earn First-Team All-Patriot League honors. Ffrench cleared a PR and ECAC mark of 5-7 (1.70m) on her second attempt. The height is tied for the second-best mark in school history.

Junior Kristin Smith, the 2011 high jump champion, placed third with a clear of 5-5 (1.65m). Ffrench and Smith combined for 16 team points in the high jump.

The Mids grabbed 10 points in the long jump, with senior Christine Scales and freshman Sarah Barnum both scoring. Scales placed third with a mark of 18-0½ (5.50m) and Barnum was fourth at 17-11¾ (5.48m). Both marks were PRs for the long jumpers.

Ffrench and junior Jessica Ridgway will run in the finals of the 60m dash on Sunday. Ffrench placed fourth in the qualifier with a 7.85 and Ridgway was fifth with a 7.86. Both times are new PRs.

Ffrench will also compete in Sunday's final of the 200m dash. Ffrench tied for the eighth and final spot with a 25.84. Ffrench's time will be converted to a 25.34, which is a PR for Ffrench.

Senior Ashley Aitken clocked the second best prelim time in the 60m hurdles and will compete in the finals on Sunday. Aitken won her heat with a season-best time of 8.88.

The finals of the 14 remaining events will be held on Sunday. The running events will begin at 12 noon with the mile run and the field events start at 10:00 am.
