Smith Earns ECAC All-East High Jump Honors
March 3, 2012
BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Kristin Smith highlighted the Navy women's indoor track and field team's performance in the ECAC Indoor Championship on Saturday by earning ECAC All-East honors. Navy (21-1) will have one more day of competition at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Sunday.
Smith earned ECAC All-East honors by placing sixth in the high jump with a clear of 5-7¾ (1.72m). The clear is Smith's indoor personal record and the second best indoor mark in school history. Smith also earned All-East honors in the high jump as a freshman in the outdoor season. Smith's outdoor personal record in the high jump is a 5-8 (1.73m). Sophomore Veronica Ffrench, the 2012 Patriot League high jump champion, placed 18th in the high jump after clearing 5-4½ (1.64m).
Smith's sixth-place finish earned Navy three team points, leaving the squad tied for 22nd after the first day of competition and after five scored events.
"Kristin was really strong in her approach today and everything came together really well for her," head coach Carla Criste said. "We felt that everyone peaked at the right time and we were also very proud of the mile relay team's performance. Now we are looking forward to Amanda Phelps competing in the weight throw tomorrow."
Navy's 4x400m relay team of senior Colleen McFadden, junior Natasha Druggan, senior Mansfield Murph and junior Arabia Littlejohn placed 17th in the prelims with a 3:51.04, the team's best time of the season and the second best time in school history. Murph ran a 56 split on the anchor leg.
Druggan also placed 14th in the prelims of the 500m dash with a personal record time of 1:15.28.
Junior Brigid Byrne just missed earning All-East honors in the 5,000m run, placing ninth in the event with a time of 17:12.26. Byrne was just .80 seconds outside of the top eight. Byrne won the 5,000m run at the 2012 Patriot League Indoor Championship two weeks ago.
Navy's 4x800m relay team placed 11th in the prelims with a time of 9:13.96, its second best time of the season. Navy used an all-plebe 4x800m relay team of Maria Arnone, Sarah Bernhardt, Shannon Cuthbert and Annie-Norah Beveridge.
Phelps will be the lone Midshipman in action on Sunday, but will be competing in her specialty - the weight throw. Phelps has won the weight throw at each of the last two Patriot League Indoor Championships and her seed of 58-9¼ (17.91m) has her ranked ninth in the event. Phelps placed 12th in the weight throw at the 2011 ECAC Indoor meet.
