Women's Track and Field Concludes Meet at George Mason
FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Navy women's track and field team concluded competition in its first road meet of the outdoor season, competing in the 22-team George Mason Spring Invitational at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va.
The Midshipmen rested some athletes after the Army-Navy Star Series Meet sending a fresh squad to Fairfax for the George Mason Invitational.
"It was a good opportunity for most of the athletes who didn't get a chance to compete last week to get exposed to some great competition this week," head coach Carla Criste said. "We were really happy at the way some of the younger athletes competed this meet."
Navy posted six top 10 finishes on the day and a total of 16 top 25 finishes.
Rosemary Brinegar notched a third place finish in the pole vault championship. She notched a height of 11ft-07.75in (3.55m) to defeat teammate Kaitlyn Stafford (11-07.75 / 3.55m) who posted the same mark by judge's decision. Stafford's finished was good enough for seventh, while Claire Chandler posted a height of 11-01.75 (3.40m) for a ninth place finish. In the pole vault college event, Madison Falvey earned second place honors with a height of 11-01.75 (3.40m).
In the 400-meter hurdles, Brittany Burg clocked a time of 1:03.49 to earn fifth place in the event.
The discus throw saw Morgan Giraud earn seventh place with a distance of 137-09 (41.98m). Teammates Rachel Duncavage (127-11 / 38.98m) and Zoe Broadway (124-02 / 37.85m) earned 12th and 18th, respectively, to give Navy three finishers in the top 20.
The Midshipmen also placed three finishers in the top 20 of the hammer throw. Isabella Marini led the charge with a 13th place finish with a throw of 143-07 (43.76m). Audrey Brandon claimed 17th with a distance of 139-01 (42.40m) just ahead of Morgan Giraud who finished 18th with a mark of 136-10 (41.70m).
Navy posted four more top 25 finishes in the throws. Haley Unger (112-03 / 34.22m) placed 16th in the javelin, while Broadway (38-03.50 / 11.67m) was the top performer in the shot put, taking 19th. Haley Unger (38-01.25 / 11.61m) and Isabella Marini (37-04.00 / 11.38m) were 21st and 24th, respectively, in the shot put.
The Mids' Jessica Wheeler posted a height of 4-09.00 (1.45m) in the high jump to earn 23rd.
Navy will continue the outdoor season at Johns Hopkins on Friday.
