May 3, 2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Navy women's track and field team won two individual events and finished the first day of the two-day 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championship in third place with 38 points at Lehigh's Goodman Campus.
Bucknell is in first place after six scored events with 44 points, followed by host Lehigh (43), Navy (38), Lafayette (27), Army (18), Holy Cross (15), American (1) and Colgate (0).
"We had some great performances today and that should carry us into a strong second day tomorrow," head coach Carla Criste said. "Brigid [Byrne] and Annie-Norah [Beveridge] set a great tone for us by going 1-2 in the 10K, the first event of the day, and that really got us rolling."
Senior Brigid Byrne won the 10,000m run with a time of 35:40.28 and sophomore Annie-Norah Beveridge was second at 37:03.08. Navy took 19 points in the event as senior Jacqueline Blackburn was sixth at 38:26.01.
Both Byrne and Beveridge were under the ECAC-qualifying standard in the 10K and Blackburn achieved a new personal-best time. Byrne recently broke the Navy school record in the 10K (34:51) and her time on Friday is the seventh-best time in school history. This is her second league title after winning the 2012 indoor 5K.
Junior Alix Membreno won the javelin throw with a mark of 139-11 (42.66m). The three-time Patriot League champion as a member of the Navy women's basketball team wins her first track and field individual title. Membreno's mark Friday was over the ECAC-qualifying standard.
"Alix really stepped up for us," Criste said. "She was seeded second in the event and she made a great throw into a tough crosswind."
Junior Sierra Parks competed in four of the seven heptathlon events on Friday. Parks ran a 16.76 in the 100m hurdles, cleared 5-0¼ (1.53m) in the high jump, posted a mark of 31-3¼ (9.53m) in the shot put and clocked a 27.91 in the 200m dash. Parks finished the day in sixth place in the heptathlon with 2416 points with three events remaining on Saturday.
Senior Jordan Kronshage placed fifth in the pole vault with a clear of 11-8½ (3.57m), her best mark of the outdoor season.
Sophomore Sarah Barnum placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 17-2¼ (5.24m).
Senior Jessica Ridgway ran a 12.57 in the prelims of the 100m dash and a 25.89 in the prelims of the 200m dash to advance to the finals of both events on Saturday.
