WORCESTER, Mass. - The Navy women's track and field team scored 28 points on the first day of the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship at Holy Cross' Hart Field on Friday. Navy is currently in fourth place, behind Bucknell (44), Lehigh (41) and Lafayette (35).

Sophomore Alix Membreno took second place in the javelin throw for the second straight year with a mark of 139-9 (42.60m, ECAC), her second-best mark of the season. Membreno's second-place showing garnered eight team points for the Mids.

The Mids earned eight points by placing second in the 4x800m relay. Navy set a school record with a time of 8:45.45 (ECAC) but lost by just 0.49 seconds to Bucknell (8:44.94).

The 4x800m relay team was comprised of Annie-Norah Beveridge, Shannon Cuthbert, Mansfield Murph and Jess Palacio.

It was the third relay school record broken by Navy this year after the team set new standards in the 4x100m and the distance medley relay earlier this season.

Junior Brigid Byrne placed third in the 10,000m run with a 36:54.78 (ECAC), to take six team points. Freshman Emily Jensen ran a personal record of 37:55.08, but finished just outside the scoring (top six) in eighth place.

Junior Melanie Sluzewicz sits in third place in the heptathlon after the first day with 2711 points. Sluzewicz had the top high jump (5-3¾) and the top shot put (33-7½) marks and ran the second-fastest 200m dash (26.51).

Senior captain Amanda Phelps took fourth place in the hammer throw with a mark of 175-1 (53.27m, ECAC) and sophomore Maressa Guynn placed sixth at 157-10 (48.11m). The duo combined for seven points in the event.

Freshman Amanda Graham scored in the pole vault by clearing 11-7¾ (3.55m), her personal record, to take sixth place.

Navy has two athletes qualified in the finals of the 100m dash. Junior Jessica Ridgway will be seeded second after running a 12.27 in the prelims and sophomore Veronica Ffrench advanced after running a 12.40.

Senior Ashley Aitken ran the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100m hurdles (14.48). Aitken will run in the finals on Saturday.

The second and final day of the outdoor league championship will be contested on Saturday.
