Palacio and Membreno Compete at NCAA Track Regional

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Navy women's outdoor track and field team opened the NCAA East Regional Championship on Thursday at North Florida's Hodges Stadium by competing in the first round of the 1,500m run and the javelin throw, with each competitor placing 29th.
Senior Jess Palacio (Sun Valley, Nev.) placed ninth in her heat and 29th overall in the first round of the 1,500m run with a time of 4:28.47. Twenty-four runners advanced to Saturday's national quarterfinal in the 1,500m.
Palacio, who was named the winner of Navy's Vice Adm. Lawrence Sword for Women on Thursday, concludes a standout track and field career. Palacio earned All-America honors in the mile run during the indoor track and field season and graduates with five individual middle distance school records.
This was Palacio's third straight year competing at the NCAA East Regional.
Alix Membreno (Loxahatchee, Fla.) placed 29th in the javelin with a mark of 133-11 (40.82m). Membreno made her mark of 133-11 on her third throw after opening with a 129-10 (39.58m) and then a 127-9 (38.95m).
Membreno also competed in the javelin at the NCAA East Regional last season and improved upon her 37th-place showing in 2011.
Sophomore Lauren Allam (Pasadena, Md.) will be Navy's third and final participant at the NCAA East Regional when she competes in the discus on Friday at 3:00 pm.
