Track and Field Claims Four PL Athlete of the Week Honors
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Navy track and field team earned four Patriot League M-F Athletic Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors as announced by the conference office. Senior captain Brittany Burg (Gasport, N.Y.) was selected Female Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Cedric Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) earned Male Field Athlete of the Week, freshman Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.), a repeat honoree from a week ago, was named Male Rookie of the Week and freshman Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas) earned Female Rookie of the Week.
At the Navy Invitational/Multis, the quartet helped the Midshipmen post a strong performance that saw the Navy women posted four top-10 performances in school history, while men recorded 19 IC4A qualifiers.
Burg placed-third in the 400-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 56.04, leading the Patriot League for that distance this season. Her time in the 400m dash was the seventh fastest in program history. She also placed-ninth in the 200m dash (25.54) with the sixth best time in the Patriot League this season. In addition, Burg ran the third-leg of the 4x400m relay that clocked the second-fastest time in Navy program history (3:48.33). Navy leads the Patriot League along with being ranked 64th in NCAA Division I in the 4x400m relay event. This is Burg’s second M-F Athletic Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week award this season.
Williams posted a pair of IC4A-qualifying marks in the long jump and triple jump, finishing in second-place in both events. Both his long jump of 7.25m (23-09.50) and triple jump of 14.59m (47-10.50) leads the Patriot League and ranks 57th in the long jump and 74th in the triple jump in NCAA Division I, respectively. Williams’ distance in the triple jump was first IC4A qualifying mark of the year for the Midshipmen.
Hughey is a repeat M-F Athletic Patriot League Male Rookie of the Week honoree from last week. His fourth-place 400m dash time of 49.10 earned him a second IC4A-qualifying mark this season and is currently the third-best time in the Patriot League. The time was the fastest of the year for the freshman and the second fastest time of the season for Navy.
Edwards posted a strong performance by having a top-10 finish and recording the fastest Midshipmen time in the 60m dash in 7.84 seconds. She also placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.11 seconds, which was the fourth fastest time in Navy history. Edwards ran the lead leg of Navy’s third-place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:48.33. In the Patriot League, she is tied for the top 60m dash, ranks third in the 200m dash, and her 4x400m relay team leads the league. This is her second M-F Athletic Patriot League Female Rookie of the Week award this season.
The Navy track and field team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, as the Midshipmen head to College Park, Md. For the Maryland Terrapin Invitational.
