Trio of Throwers Named Patriot League Athletes of the Week
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Three members of the Navy track and field team were selected as Patriot League M-F Athletic Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week as announced by the conference office. Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.) and Ashanti Curry (Jacksonville, N.C.) were named Male and Female Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, while Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) was tabbed Female Rookie of the Week.
Brennan posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the shot put and the weight throw at the SPIRE Division I Classic, registering a pair of IC4A qualifying marks. The junior was the top finisher for Navy in the shot put with a throw of 16.84m (55-03.00) to finish sixth. He took ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 17.21m (56-05.75). The throws were the third best and eighth best this season for Navy in the shot put and weight throw, respectively.
Curry tied a season-best with a throw of 14.09m (46-02.75) in the shot put at the SPIRE Division I Classic. The ECAC qualifying mark ties herself for the sixth best throw in Navy indoor history. Heading into the Patriot League Indoor Championship, Curry holds five of Navy’s top-10 indoor shot put records, including two from this season.
Orie competed in a pair of throwing events over the weekend at the SPIRE Division I Classic. She was the top finisher for Navy in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying mark of 16.55m (54-03.75) to finish 10th in the event. The throw was the top distance of the season for all Midshipmen. In the shot put, Orie finished just outside the top 10 (12th) in the event, registering a distance of 12.92m (42-04.75), which is the second-best throw of the season for the plebe.
Navy track and field returns to action next weekend as the Midshipmen travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for the 2018 Patriot League Indoor Championship.
