The Navy men's and women's track & field teams, fresh off their respective first-place finishes at the Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) Invitational last weekend, will each play host to Ohio and Delaware at newly-renovated Ingram Field Saturday. Men's field events will begin at 11 a.m., while the women will begin field events at approximately 12:15 p.m.

The meet will mark both Navy teams' first competition on the $1.7 million-renovated Ingram Field. Amongst improvements to existing fixtures, the eight-lane track and the jumping areas were completely resurfaced with MONDO Super X Performance material. A new Daktronics scoreboard has been added to the facility, and additional discus and shot put circles have been added for use in competition. Furthermore, the javelin event, which had to be held at Dewey Field in the past, can now be contested within the track's confines. Along with a new "D" zone that was added for high jumping, additional bleachers have been added to the track, making the seating capacity at Ingram Field approximately 1,300.

"We cannot wait to hold competitions on this track," said Navy men's track & field coach Steve Cooksey. "We've had to put off hosting major competitions because we haven't had up-to-par facilities. But with the track we have now, competitions like the Heptagonal Championship can be held here at Navy."

"We look forward to running meets at this national-caliber facility," said Navy women's track & field coach Carla Criste. "We've already seen faster-than-normal practice times in our training sessions, and we expect a great deal of outstanding times and marks to come at Ingram Field this year and in the years to come."

The men's team kicked off its 2002 outdoor season by scoring a 98-67 victory over Point Loma Nazarene last Saturday in San Diego. The Mids (1-0) had one-two sweeps in a pair of events. In the 100m, indoor track captain C.J. Simonsen (Sr./Coon Rapids, Minn.) (11.11) and Shalimar Brazier (So./Detroit, Mich.) (11.21) had respective first and second-place finishes, while Jake Cahalan (Jr./West Warwick, R.I.) and Matt Reese took the top-two spots in the hammer throw. Cahalan won the event with a toss of 160'5", while Reese checked in with a mark of 120'11".

The women's team (2-0), highlighted by junior Shannon Crites' (Powell, Ohio) school-record high jump, took home a tri-meet victory late Saturday night at the Point Loma Nazarene Invitational. The Mids (2-0) scored 140 points in winning the meet, followed by Point Loma (115) and Wisconsin-Stout (74).

Crites cleared a height of 5'7" in winning the high jump. She breaks the old Navy outdoor record of 5'6.5", a mark originally set in 1997 by Suzanne Dondero and tied by Crites last year. Crites also was victorious in the long jump (17'7") and the 100m hurdles (15.44).

Danielle Yambao (Jr./Cerritos, Calif.) was a double winner in her return home to the Golden State. She sprinted to first-place finish in the 100m with a time of 12.81, and the 200m with a time of 25.99.
