March 22, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's track and field program will open its 2013 outdoor season at William & Mary's Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. this weekend. Fellow Patriot League schools Army and Lafayette will be competing, as well as George Mason, Yale, Richmond, Norfolk State and a number of other schools. Live results will be available.
The Navy women's track and field team is coming off an indoor season that saw it defeat Army, 97-84, for the eighth-straight season and place second in the Patriot League Indoor Championship.
The Mids are the defending Patriot League Outdoor Champions, as the team won the conference meet in May 2012 with 156.5 points. Head coach Carla Criste was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year and 2012 graduate Jess Palacio was tabbed as the Patriot League Track-Athlete of the Meet.
Navy also earned an outdoor N-Star victory over Army last year, picking up a 116-87 win in West Point. The win allowed Navy's Class of 2012 to graduate with an 8-0 record against Army in dual meets.
Senior Melanie Sluzewicz will serve as the outdoor season team captain. Sluzewicz earned ECAC All-East honors in the heptathlon last outdoor season.
Senior Kristin Smith is coming off an indoor season where she won the Patriot League title in the high jump for the second time. Smith has also been the Patriot League high jump runner-up twice.
Senior Brigid Byrne earned ECAC All-East honors in the 5,000m run during the indoor season and was the runner-up in the 5K at the Patriot League Championship.
Navy sent three athletes to the NCAA East Regional last outdoor season. Palacio placed 29th in the 1,500m run, junior Lauren Allam was 43rd in the discus and junior Alix Membreno, who is competing with the Navy women's basketball team in the NCAA Tournament this weekend, was 29th in the javelin.
Allam is Navy's school-record holder in the discus at 165-7 (50.49m).
Navy will next compete at the Towson Invitational on Saturday, March 30.
